hey all, I was wondering if there is any good quality mp3 players that would be the same price and same storage space as a Ipod mini. Im only asking this because the Ipods have sealed batterys in them and it cost $200 for a new battery. Which is just a $100 from a new one.

You don't know what your missing till you've listened to a sony MD....

I used to own 2 mp3 players...because they are cheap and functional...and under $200...but then they malfuctioned and let me down big time(lost all the data on the thing + songs)

But then I saved up $300 more and bought the MD...fuk...mp3 + HDLP + portable mini hard disk via usb + G-shock protection + live recording + GREAT sound... Sometimes $300 bucks more goes a long way...

Buying a portable media player can sometimes make me feel like shopping for bike parts....some extra cash will get you a different level of experience...:)

But then again, the mp3 player's always a cheaper alternative...

Just go and get a $50 one from the post office. 128mg memory which is about 2 hours of music. As Naz said, function over fashion...or hang on, did he say fashion over function??

Anyway, $50 option for cheap asses is pretty good.

Not sure if it's any good, but the latest Target catalogue has an Omni 20Gb mp3 player with direct mp3 encoding for $299.

yea but those players were obviously cheap shit, a decent player would obviously have been better... although they can cost mega$$$ but worth it over the cheaper crap...

WTR -
being a long term netMD user, I would have to strongly think twice about buying another. I too had the "get what you pay for" mentality, and about 1 1/2 years ago now coughed up the coin on a top of the line (at the time) sony MZ-N1. This was in the MDLP days, pre HDLP obviously, but same shit different bucket.

I bought it to use it, not for it to sit around, and over the last year or more it has recorded and played over and over, been dropped 2-3 times accidently, and bounced around in my camelbak a while riding a plenty, amongst other things.

It still works today, but only reads when it feels like it, stops playing and comes up with read errors more often than not, and is a general pain in the ass. Yes it has seen some abuse but I would have expected it to take much more and lasted a lot longer before it started giving up. Yes the sound quality is EXCELLENT but that is not the only thing that needs to be taken into consideration.

My advice is, look after it and don't drop it at all. Moving parts in a portable media player was always asking for trouble, regardless of G-shock typeR bla bla bla.

Next time it'll be something with 0 moving parts for me, a small i-river mp3 player, that costs less, stores less, and is less of a pain in the ass. (ah the joys of ATRAC, thanks sony, not!)

ive had an i pod for nealy a year now and it is great, ive had one problem and i got a new one with in less than a week, the problem was my fault but they still gave me a new one no questions asked, and as for the batteries it's still the same as when i bought it,

so all u ipod haters they are good, u just wish u had one.

i dont wish i had an ipod at all, let alone anything from apple.
i have had my creative muvo2 for about a year now, and couldnt be much happier about owning it.
my brother brought a 40gb photo ipod a few weeks ago, and now wishes he could rade it for my tiny 4gb player (tiny in size)

in my opinion there are only a few small capacity (and size) hard drive players around that are worth buying
- creative zen micro (5gb)
- creative muvo2 or movo2 FM (4gb and 5gb respectively)
- i river mini (5gb)
- jnc (not sure what the name is, and pretty sure is 4gb) micro audio player

these are the best and most worth looking at micro players on the market in my opinion.

yep i have more hatred for ipods than this forum combined, and i know from first hand experience my sister got a ipod mini when they came out in america months before they were pubicly released here, and there fucked mate, shit battery, lack of codec support, shit interface, etc.
