Guys, just wondering what Tool you carry with you when out riding ?
I hear the the Topeak Alien is excellent...just wanted your opinions etc
I have a red Specialized multi tool which I bought for about $10 and a $10 chain breaker. Both have their small and almost insignificant weaknesses and have endured many tweaks and repairs. You can pay a lot of $$$ for goochi multi tools and you'll only use half of it. Don't get caught up in the hype buddy. In saying that, some of those "goochi" tools are pretty goochi  I'm just afraid I'll loose 'emlike any other thing I pay too much for.

I don't use multi tools.
I have a neoprene sun glasses case, approx 13cm x 6cm and i carry the following in it
1. Park chain breaker
2. Full set of individual metric and imperial allen keys
3. Set of tire leavers
4. Spare chain links
5. Spare chain pins
6. Spare derailelr hanger
7. Puncture repair kit
8. Bit of wire that i use to hold the chain when putting it together
9. Park spoke key
10. Small adjustable wrench
I also carry a small pump.
I find cheap multi tools are, well, cheap in quality.
The only tool I carry when riding is myself.
Now seriously...
I like cave dwellers idea, should put one of those together myself since i'm always loosing things on the trail. One tip I can give is never put small parts (screws etc) and tools on the ground while fixing something, 90% of the time they end up lost.
The other thing is michelin plastic tyre levers - I haven't got a set (yet) but having used them a few times they are the best levers ever.

I use an Alien (original, not RX) and I swear by it. In addition I carry some tubes (okay, so a lot of tubes :o ) and some Weldtite red devils and Michy tyre levers.
Keeps me pretty well sorted, anything else can be fixed with a big stick, or a rock.

I just carry individual parts, quite similar to the kits mentioned above. I keep the spare chain pins, tiny allen keys and any other small bits in a small zip lock bag. If you are doing major trail repairs, you can put screws into this bag so you don't lose them.
crammed into a hydration pack:
Multi-19
Leatherman (broke my Gerber)
Michelin tyre levers (3 of 'em coz I'm paranoid)
Magnesium/flint firestarter thingy
Very basic first aid kit
water filter drinking straw
stainless signal mirror
rain jacket
tubes
phone
cash
food
Is this a lot? Perhaps, But I've been stuck out on the trail overnight with a torn cruciate. Now I carry enough to get me by if it ever happens again.

Another vote for the Alien. 6 years and I'm on my second one (only because I lost the first)
best multitool (with Chainbreaker) out there IMO

The ALIEN is definitely the way to go. 23 Functions - Plenty of tools for possibly all your needs on the trail!!!

In terms of tire levers the crank brothers speed lever is well worth the $10-15 investment. It retracts and hooks onto the the axel of the wheel and you move it around the rim, sooo easy and fast. Works like the machines they use to fit car tires. Just get one you will see what I mean.
