Just wondering if there are many people out there who partake in sandboarding in their other spare time.
If so share your experiences, plus what kind of board you rode/ride, what type of bindings, etc etc
My mate is in the midst of crafting a couple of boards that we intend to launch skywards on the sandy slopes.

Yeh i did that too in WA a while back, from what i can remember it was fun, but the sand dunes aint massive so you only get a small time on the board before you have to walk back up.

Yep a little. I used to live on the Yorke Peninsula in SA where there are quite a few sand dunes close by, nothing like the ones you get in WA though.
I ended up making my own sandboard using plywood glued together with PVA and shaped in a little jig I made with a few clamps. The slippy bottom was some old laminex I had lying around. Epoxy was used to fix this to the plywood.
I would recommend polyethylene sheeting for the bottom if you wanted to do it properly. It comes in 1mm thick sheets too.
The straps, which were off an old school bag, were screwed into the board with many short screws...

Port Augusta? Or as the locals call it, Port Augutta? How many times did you get bashed?

Sounds like a few of you have given it a proper go, so, how would you rate it in terms of functionality... and fun?
From what i have seen it looks to have heaps of potential. There isn't a great deal of stuff online, a fair bit in South America, but the vids i have downloaded are often kinda dodgey. Among them there are a couple which are pretty impressive - pretty big turns, high speeds, and some ok jumps... i can't wait to give it a go.

they are all pussys on the yorke peninsula :P. jks jks, my grandma lives there, near edithburg. they now have these big fuck off windmill thingos for electricity. there is this one dune where you take a running leap with a bodyboard and go about 15-20 ft straight down to a mad tranny. it is siczor as i like to say.

I've done heaps of sandboarding and it was awesome. We just used regular snowboards.
Unfortunately it was always very cold and usually inland so instead of sand we had to use snow.

Closet I've come is getting towed behind a car on a plastic snow tobogan along the beach. That was lots of fun and speeds of around 50k's were easily obtained.

done heaps!
lancelin is about 1.5 hours north of perth and has some awsome dunes to do it on. drive up in the hilux drop the tyre pressure and hit the dunes!
used cheapo sandboards made in woodwork at school, and a candle to wax up the bottom. SO much fun. if you got a 4wd with a bit of grunt then tow in jumps off dunes are the way to go...just aim at the edge and turn away (be careful though if you are inexperienced with dune 4wd'ing, its not that easy and the potential to roll down a 50ft dune (=totalled car and possible death) is quite high.
i love it, and its so adaptable. we parked the ute halfway down a long dune and bulit a body board kicker so we could do grinds along the bull bar. pretty cool really. its similar to snowboarding but you dont go as fast (at first). towing behind the ute along flat dunes is fun, but too risky for me at the speeds we were doing! about 65km/h and over rocks!
other fun things is towing behind the ute along the beach, start in the water on about 2inches of water and carve out, then come in and skim along the receding water, but as soon as it all goes you better get back out fast, otherwise face meets sand!
in short...sandboarding = kick ass fun!

Yeah I have also done a bit around the Perth area. I seem to remember the walking uphill sucked, the trying to find that last little bit of candle for your last run sucked the coming off at full tilt hurt your ankles and thus sucked, but the overall ride was pretty damn cool.
We tried towing it just in the water behind the dirt bike but didnt have much luck as when the guy on the sand board fell off the bloke on the bike doesnt last long.
Used to do it on my bodyboard (an old BZ) we built little ramps to do barrel rolls off and stuff but your gut gets cained and there is a good chance of getting your nads caught if you happen to land wrong.
I always enjoyed the skiffle board but, loved going drop knee into an oncoming shorey. I think they have special boards for that shit now.

Sandboardin is great fun, I live near the beach and hed down now and then. not a every week sport (gets a bit tiring) but good none the less. I have 2 boards made of 6 ply board. If you want anymore details on construction pm me and i'll post them up :) They are double ended like a snowboard shape.... They will prob set u back mabye ~$40-50?? and a bit of your time. However they are proper boards, laminated bottom etc...bindings.... Our local dunes are'nt the biggest but still good fun! Jumps are fun, but the sand takes AGES to mould....
