Greetings from Canada,
I am probably moving to Perth for a year or two for work. I am really worried that there is a serious lack of good off road riding around Perth. Are there any DH/Free ride trails within an hour or two of the city? Is there any XC single track in the city? I currently live where I can ride shore style stuff everyday.
From what I can see in pictures it is pretty flat. I prefer downhill rather than XC but I would take either. I have a feeling that my riding style is going to have to change significantly.
Please reassure me that there is good riding in the Perth area. Also, since I will be in the Perth area, where is the best suburb or area in WA to move to ensure that I can ride dirt every day with out having to drive there first or travel a lot of pavement between short segments of singletrack (if possible).
Thanks,
you poor poor soul, perth is australia, would be like living in the artic from canada.

Well being born there killed Sam Hill's career, and made Johnny Waddell a poor rider. Having seen their results, dunno how anyone could possibly hope to become a downhiller in Perth.
By the way have a look at www.minus6.com

So there are good riders. The sarcasm wasn't lost on me. Are there good trials close to or in Perth? That's really wanted to know. I wasn't ripping on Perth or WA. I just wanted to know what there is around there. If I see the name of a trail or town in Australia I have no idea where they are in relation to anything. A good example of this would be, "do you know where Kitscotty is in relation to Edmonton?" Probably not.
It would be good, not as good as the northshore but not bad!
Basically we have quite a few downhill areas around the place, most of these are withing 2 hours or perth and many alot closer. There is also xc tracks (some very close to the city), the best 4x track in australia, a 12 hour race course, also there will soon be northshore built to the whistler trail standard ive heard......theres also regular street rides in the city.
Western australia also has its own freeride club (karnage on heres the head honcho) so check out www.wafr.tk,www.perthmtb.com is another good link to check out.
Basically the Perth scence isnt as bad as its made out to be, there is actually a lot of riding that goes on, if you do move to perth get in contact with us and get out on some rides!
3 chillies farm is near perth isnt it?
That is unreal, you'll have to check out its accessability though..
good to see you canadians comin down under!
No more "go huck a ski do off an iglu, ehh" .... ;)

Thanks for the feedback. I makes it a lot easier to move if you know you won't be disappointed with the riding.
Yes, the 3 chillis farm is just north of perth, but is not open to the public it can only be ridden on race/practise days.
Yeah you wont be too dissapointed with the riding, sure its nothing on the northshore but theres some not too shoddy riding around here.
If you are interested there is also now a calender of the coming races at perthmtb.com as well which may be good to check out. Do you know around what time you will be coming to Perth if you come?

Perth itself isn't that good for riding, aside from urban. It's whether you're willing to travel for a few hours. Nannup and Wellington mills are awesome, but you've gotta travel in excess of 2 hours to get to either.
It really depends what your looking for,
there is good riding in, mundaring, york, Mt Gunjin, Jarrahdale, Dwellingup, Gooseberry hill (goat farm), kalamunda, Darling range park, I also believe good riding down Bunbury way, apparently I hear a MTB park being started somewhere around there??
Also about 4 hours north is geralton, I believe there is riding up there also,
as well as 4 hours south is Albany there is also some good riding for a day or so. I believe esperance has some good riding as well, local DH tracks ect, which is 5 hours east, Denmark which is 50 km west of Albany has some amazing trail/All mountain riding also, if you don't mind a bit of push up, then hammer down type riding.
There is a diverse range of riders in perth, DH only guys, guys who call themselves freeriders (when actually they are just urban riders really) X/C maniacs and some All Mountain/Trail riders (who pretty much ride everything, except insane A Lines on Downhill tracks)
It's really going to come down to what bike/bikes you have and what you wanna do with them.
I don't believe our riding trails here are anything like compared to what you have.. but we do have some cool stuff, you won't be left with nothing to ride at least.
Kind Regards

Here's a link of some of the stuff I ride here. It is a web page that I put together for my friends and I. There is also some helmet cam video of a trail I built. Lately I've been really into dirt jumps because the bush still has some snow in it.
http://www.bigmountainrider.com/mountain_biking.htm
I also ride XC. I have a 2003 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC. For DH & trails with stunts and drops bigger than 4' I have a Santa Cruz Bullit with a 2001 swing arm, a 2002 front triangle, a 2004 2.75" stroke Swinger 4 way which gives my 8 1/4" rear travel, and a 7" 2003 Jr T. It sounds messed up but the geometry is 1 deg. slacker than the current Bullit for those steep lines and there is an inch more rear travel.
I've been thinking about getting the new SC Jeckal because I heard bikes cost a lot more there. I don't know how true that is though. As long as I can find some XC trails and some DJ's near by I'll be happy. I know that there are some DH trails because I have done some searching but you can't always drive 2 hours after work to go ride them.
It looks like I'll be heading to Perth so I might see some of you when I am there.

you better not be talking about the WAFR riders. we ride DH, street anything hence freeriders.plus most of us are on hardtails and do bigger DH stuff than alot of dually guys.
but yer there is quite a lot of good riding in perth you just have to know people who know where to go.
