you obviously don't know how to use it properly... if you think it's crap coz it isn't. Something like premiere in my opinion is more powerful and easier to use, but jeeze you can do some amazing stuff with vegas.
sounds as if u dont have a codec, if u play stuff in wmp or somethin do u get the same problem?
try divx, xvid or mp4?

For one, anyone who says that Vegas 5.0 is shit. Is a complete moron. Second, Premiere is only better for Photoshop Weenies, if you have a background in audio you would probably prefer Vegas. Anything you can do in Premiere you can do in Vegas, and for me, I can do it easier.
Anyway, for your external monitor it has to be set up to work as an output on your comuter for one. Do you have an AV-Out that you KNOW works and you have tested before? If yes, test it again. If not, then make sure your AV (or S-video?) plug actually can output. I would imagine it would, but it's important to know. NEXT get it working, drivers, testing who fucking cares, just get it going. It's not rocket science.
Then if all that is fine, make sure you have it set up right in vegas....
I realise you said sound works, but I am just going through my usual checklist.
Do you get any signal, blackness can be a signal in itself. Hell you could have it set up on NTSC and have a Pal tv (though that would be somethign different all together).
anyway

Make sure that you when you render it you save it as PAL. I had that problem when I first had Vegas 4 but I honestly cant remember how I fixed it. I just exported the movies as WMV

I kind of have the same problem..
when I add a vid clip to the track bar thing up the top it puts it in the audio track and wont let me put it in the video track, and its an AVI. file
Then when I try and preview it its only audio and no video, the little vid screen stays black.
Any ideas??

i can't actually remember how the other issue was resolved...silly me
but i think its got something to do with codec...if you're importing the avi file try sticking it in windows moviemaker or whatever...if it doesnt work in that then its a codec problem...if it does...then try getting vegas 4. you could also try and work out what codec the clip is in...and download it off the net.
for example...if it was like divx....and you hadnt installed divx on ur computer...you wouldnt be able to stick it into vegas.
have you tried putting other clips into vegas? does it only happen with that particular one?
