Hi,
Just bought a STP1, complete utter n00b when it comes to setting the bike up. Would like to move it towards an urban trials style bike.
Can you recommend some upgrades that you feel should be done? and any tips or tricks that I can use to make the bike better eg stopping chain slap, changing the gearing (cogs) etc.
Thanks

well it depends on what you want to do with the bike.. like you said you want urban trials etc etc. so perhaps you might want to look at going single speed?, that will stop the chain slap, but if you want to stick with gears then get a chainguide such as a blackspire or e13.
basically the stp's come pretty good out of the box, few things have to be changed such as the pedals and bar/stem combo. and those are pretty much personal preference so go with whatever your comfortable with.
i put rebas on my stp and the difference is huge! their light as and have heaps more adjustablilty than the drop off's.
anyway good luck with it, just ride with whatever your comfortable with.
good luck with it.

How much were the rebas? will they work with the front disc?
Where could I pick up one of those chainguides from?

check with your lbs about the rebas, it depends on how well you know them, usually they can give you a pretty good price if your nice! ;)
i dont see any reason why they shouldnt work with the front disc.. as they are a disc specific fork.
same applies with the chainguide, ask your lbs, they should be able to organise everything for you.

have a look in the parts and stuff i think there is a e 13 for sale. My mate is using some psylos on his p1 and they feel really good nice and light dam strong he goes nuts.
With an STP, a must change is the bar/stem and pedals. The bar/stem is a very cheap quality and the geometry of them is off-putting. The pedals will naturally fall appart.
Appart from that, stoping chain slap can only really be achieved by buying a chainguide ($200-$350), getting a shorter cage derailleur (~$100) or making your bike singlespeed using a tensioner ($50-$100).
www.dhdirect.com.au is a good site with some sweet bar/stem/pedal deals, and might have some chainguides and tensioners on tap aswell.

yeah i would say new bars n stem n pedal for sure try aireal industries fat stem (in pimpen gold or red of course) with sum pro tabers or azonic bars. maybe also sum azonic or da bomb pedals i dunno what eva tickels ya fancy
also if u have the cash sum new forks less travel if ya going street trials maybe dj1,2,3 but there not gunna be the best for weight or something from the sherman range.
oh and a set of smo rims would be nice possilbly 24" if ya wanted

well ive upgraded my stp2
new bars and stem are aireal fat stem in red and easton ea70 monkeybars.
Ive gone singlespeed and it has stopped all the chain slap and feels great!
the forks are marzocchi dj3s heavy as hell but feel lots better than EXR comps. two more upgrades coming are a hydraulic rear brake and then some Felt Backpedals then its done
For your stp1 i would reccomend going singlespeed and just changing the bar, stem and pedals thats about all you would need.

so far the bar and the stem seem to be the main thing to uprade at this point along with a chainguide
change the wheels, go singlespeed, change, the suspension.
721 on tuffneck hubs
reba race forks
32:14 is a pretty good ratio for SS but then again its personal.

Why change the wheels.
and whats the 721 on tuffneck hubs?
I am looking at the reba's
721 are the best rim for street and park, and matched with a tuffneck hub(cheap yet unbreakable) great combination if u dont wanna dish out the money for a hadley(600$+)
i got reba's there sooo sweet

how much do you think it would cost to set up 2 rims with those hubs?
the rebas are like 700 clams :S
I am considering setting up single speed or at the very least having 3 cogs on the back.

Benjamin, if you are a noob at this, start with upgrading your bars, stem, and pedals. And some lock-on grips if you haven't already.
Naz is talking about wheels, but that's not necessary, and he works for a bike shop where he gets cheap parts.
Just take it slow to upgrade when you're a noob, as you'll waste money on unnecessary changes. Just ride around with others, and get to learn what would work for you. Just because someone got XXX bling part, it's not always gonna be right for you.
Have fun with your STP - nice bikes.

The stem and bars are the first upgrade I am going to do.
I do want to avoid spending to much on the bike till I get some decent skill at it.
was thinking CF bars (so bling)
so far I have heard
Bars:
pro tapers
Bilt
easton ea70
Azonic (heard they snap)
Stem:
aireal fat stem in red
