hey everyone,
umm basically i've been riding bikes for ages [bmx and mtb] and want to get into freeriding, i've got no idea what sort of bike i need, but basically want a good beginner bike that will keep me going for a while until my skill progresses.
thanks

What's your budget?
Look at a jump-orientated hardtail as a cheap beginner bike, and be prepared to have to upgrade things as you break them.
Basically, get a solid bike, and go out and ride it... there isn't much more to it than that ;)

hrm maybe a start off with a Specialized P1, its got pretty basic parts on it and will be good enough to get u started :)
As Rik sed ull end up changing the parts that u break. The P. frame is pretty good frame and it should handle wat u throw at it.
This is wat i would get if i was you, but still its ur choice :D
good luck jono

I wouldnt get a P1 because theyre singlespeed- not very suited to FRing. I'd look at maybe a Kona hardtail and go from there.

Maybe have a look at some of the second hand bikes going around. May as well start in the Farkin Trading Area, chances are there will be a good buy for a fraction of the new price.
Something like a Kona Stuff, Specialized P2 or Norco 125 seems about right for you.

Have you been using your MTB to ride off road at all? What is it? Maybe you can fiddle with it a bit and make it more capable for "free-riding". And while we're on that topic, what's your definition of freeriding?
My sister used to ride a BMX too - but she had a basket on the front and used it to carry Barbie and Ken to her friend's house to play. And she was free to ride her bike like that if she wanted to.
Need more info squire, but like some others said - a solid hardtail would probably be the place to start. Buy used, save yourself some cash and work out where you want to go from there.
And yes, the Norco range of Shore Hardtails are meant to be classified "free-ride". But that's their definition, not necessarily yours.

he also need to learn about the EDIT button:p
a nice lil hardtail.. something like a 125 (really nice bikes, mate has one, beefed up heaps since the breaking ones, totally different i thing actually?). if not a P2 would be nice, maybe. the STP2 comes to mind as a good Sub $1000 bike, the other two are about 1400-1800. if that doesnt float your boat how about one of the new IH yakuza hardtails.. i forget what they are called but i remember them being good value.
EDIT: oh, Anthonaut, mate, have you ever ridden a SS bike? it is easy as piss to ride it places, your chain doesn't skip and you can laugh at all the ignorant little shits saying "man your bike is shit, one gear blah blah" by kicking their asses at the jumps. oh, and nothing gets you fitter!

and you dont get bent deraliures and hangers, no banging nosie when jumping or going downhill. and you dont have the risk of it going into you wheel and being gay and as the guy before me said no chain slip no crappy adjusting needed what so ever. comeing from somethat that rides gears i hope this helps. i no this because i had to do single speed for about 4 weeks due to the thing getting caught in my rear wheel.

For 1400 cash my mate picked up a norco sasquatch...im sure you could go a bit better. I reckon its worth the extra 400 for a new bike. This bike has reallllly good parts for the price - 8 inch hayes hydros, marzocchi drop off fork to name a few.
