Just wondering what sort of speed people average over their local XC loop. Starting to get into racing and I went for a spin the other day and bust my arse to get 17kmph average. Also what is the lowest gear you can use before walking would be quicker? Thanks =D

Really depends on the terrain. I've seen some loops where you would be lucky to crack 15km/h and other course up in the 20's. As to the granny gear depends on how loose the dirt or gravel is. For a given hill Mr Rowney is going to rid eit faster than most people so his steepness/roughness/walking ratio is going to be higher than most. Just keep training and when it hurts the most smile the biggest. At least you will make the others think your having fun even if you feel like puking.

I reckon my ave for 8hr+ enduro races would be close to 12kph. Sounds slow, doesn't it?
Well... it is...
...but I usually manage to finish in the top half of the field in most races that I do.

Keep that average for a 24hr race, and you'll be ready for Worlds :)

Whats everyones average speed for the Woodford to Glenbrook Oaks firetrail in the Blue Mountains?
~25km done in <40mins for the superfast riders, under an hour is an exceptional time for my fitness.

I would tell you if I knew- but I like like 1000km away :-P
As said above average time depends on a lot of things, especially fitness, and your type of fitness. I'm slow as shit at XC races, but at enduro's I can hold a faster average speed over a longer time....

Depends if you are riding up or down.... also if you do the Single Track.
You then have to consider the conditions of the track and weather. So many variables it makes the question pretty pointless unless everyone was timing themselves on the same day at the same time.
My time in last years classic was around the 58min mark, but that bypasses the ST and continues down to Euroka clearing.

i average about 24-25k's in the xc races i do but they are only over short distances, still the track is pretty demanding. Also equipment can make a big difference, like my mates 1600 dollar wheelset!

I read that the leaders (Taberlay, Rowney etc) in this years Wildside in Tasmania were averaging 40kph on ocean beach. Thats a long beach section....it has to be a typo, doesn't it???? It's got to be. I feel depressed. :( I drove my car on that beach and i think i only averaged 39kph. :o

Now there's a nice thought, but I doubt the 24hr thing is going to grab me. I'm actually on a 2 or 3 year plan to eventually make it to the Crocodile Trophy.

If you download some of the XC Race Results from the Canberra Off-Road Cyclists site at http://www.corc.asn.au/results/xc.asp , you will see that there is an average speed column on the right side. This will allow you to compare yourself to a range of riders. At the end of the day, the terrain and degree of technical difficulty will be a big factor.
