Riding home from work this morning (Saturday) on my usual route, I live in Sydney near Balmoral and i come along Military Road it's a busy road most times during the day with people going to the beach and restaunts etc. last night on a city run i had a pretty bad stack so i was feeling sore and taking it easy. Riding along at a casual pace, hugging the parked cars i have this guy in his brand new Commodore with his fat wife and his fat kids i stop at the lights and he pulls up next to me he starts pulling face's and acting like a complete wank so he drives off and get's caught in the traffic so i pull up next to him and slip a nice "dickhead" to him as i ride off he catch's up to me obviously speeding, tail gating me he swerve's on the wrong side of the road then pulls infront of me this time we are outside the cop shop he race's to get outside of his car and yells "OI!" as i ride off he get's back in his car and starts gunning it to catch up to me i am riding along no hands on the handle bar giving him shit and telling him to fuck off he is very close about a half a metre away i get to a hill where i live and i didn't want to let him know where i was so i stopped threw my bike down and walked up to him he got out and i started to intimedate him you know geting real close looking into his eyes and just being a hard arse. he was telling me all about the rules of the road and all this jazz telling me that he's going to call the cops i said go for it go tell the cops anyway eventually he goes and drive's off then i have these construction workers get all cocky and start screaming and yelling.

So i quickly get home so no one see's where i live.

Man what's up with people? if i am on the road people tell me to get off it, if i am on the foot path people tell me to get on the road, People scream and hoot at you when they go past

It's bullshit there is obviously no place for Push Bikes, i follow most of the rules and generally only break them late at night fuck people they make me so angry!!! :mad: :mad:

If there are rules for a Push bike why aren't there licence's for them? why aren't there test's for Push Bikes? if its such a problem why doesn't the government inforce it, seems like Anyone can make up whatever rules they like.

Sounds sadly familiar. I ride from Manly to Newtown most days for my commute to work. Military Road (so aptly named... you need an AK to ride down that route.... :mad: ) is one of the several routes I take, and I've experienced complete assholes several times before.

If you want to learn alternate routes to the city from Balmoral, let me know. I pass by the area all the time.

You said he was yelling at you about the road rules... Which one(s)? Were you in the wrong?

I simply ask this because the less ammo or excuses you can give the motorists for yelling at you, the better.

If it was an "Oi, get off the road"/"You don't pay rego" kind of argument, I fully sympathize with you. However, we have to be careful as cyclists how much we "bend" the rules, since it works against us in the end....

that is like these skanks from my school, everyday they walk home, walking ON the road, kicking footy's and throwing basketballs (they all think they are so called 'homies') all over the place. Then they yell abuse at me and my mate who are riding in the bike lane, which clearly has a painted picture of a bike on it, they yell out "oi get off the road dawg, bikes are ment for riding on da footpath ya dickheeead" (accurate interpretation) Yeh! good one dickhead, footpath, FOOTpath, and they are walking on the road! Why are people so dumb and arrogant?? Another bloke, obviously from the gutter and his teenage girlfriend yell abuse at me and say that i shouldn't go that fast down hills because, somehow, i would hurt the skanky teenagers baby. wtf is up with that?
People just shit me off completely, why do they do it? do they get satisfaction out of annoying people and putting their lives at risk

Problem driver behavior comes from a number of causes.

Just a few...

1) A fair percentage (a large minority) don't actually know or accept that bicycles are allowed on the road. They expect cyclists to use the footpath, and use their motor vehicle as a weapon to push that position.

2) Even more, probably a huge majority, don't know that cyclists have the right to take an entire lane (and frequently need to too), and also are ignorant of some special rules, such as hook turns, passing queues on the left, crossing red lights when the sensor hasn't detected the bike and such.

So they will assert that you don't know the rules when they are delayed for a moment.

Maybe the time is right for lobbing the RTA and pollies to get all licensed drivers re-educated and knowledge tested again. Rules for pedestrian safety are little known as well by the way, such as giving way to pedestrians when turning at intersections. So Mr Scruby and his mates may care to come to the party.


As for making non-licensed road users such as pedestrians and cyclists learn and obey- don't have an answer.

yesterday riding in the city, ride on the side of the road as close as you can get to the gutter so that cars had about 1 1/2 width to get past us this fat dickhead driving a bmw starts honking his horn at us. after about a minute of it we all moved around the car and rode really really slow. He got really scared coz we might hurt his frav car. It always seem that people we get hook there horn and yell at us are fat and lazy, i think it could be because that actuly cant ride a bike coz they would break it with there fat ass's. Cheers Al

I Quite frequently encounter road rage.
Alot of the time it is from people that dont indicate before they turn, or at least it seems to be fat/obese people at the lights for no real reason :/.

This is why i went to the protest in the city on saturday morning about the guy that was killed by a drunk driver, Who ran home and left him to die on the side of the road, only to recieve a 3000 dollar fine and 12months loss of licence.

BTW To the people that organised the protest good work its just a shame we couldnt get more people to rock up at such short notice.

Nicely said. Yeh you see people out the front of there houses which then they come with there bmx's which if you let them catch up you kick them off there bikes. Dont let them follow you on your bike when there in cars. All I did was go to the steepest hill and ride down as fast as i could and they stop chasing you as they shit themselves going down.
But i think the main reason is "Bloody Holden Drivers!"

Well he didn't say what he was on about just herling abuse at me from the start. before this happened as i said i was hugging the parked cars i had to avoid getting in an accident as a car was starting to pull out.. and had to swerve onto the road but really i don't think that started it?

About the protest's yeah i saw it on the News good on whoever orgainsed it something has to be done really i cop it everyday the days when i don't is a relief haha

It's not just road rage that gives me the shits it's those tossers that throw shit outta their car when driving along. For example I've had people flick their cigarettes at me when driving to try and make me crash or bloody stupid teenagers throwing waterbombs at me when im riding just off the highway. I mean come on people do you know how dangerous that is? I've nearly copped a waterbomb to my face which would have meant I would've crashed and perhaps got hit by a car. I mean these cases are nearly as bad as the stupid kids throwing bricks onto cars from the overpass. Ignorant people really annoy me. There are enough distractions on the road without there being any more.

That's fine. I wasn't sure if it was a concious decision on your part to include the ethnicity of the people or not.

But it can still be interpreted in a way that hurts not only the people described, but you as well in the process, as we've seen already in this thread.

Maybe the next time, when you're about to describe the kind of people who were doing something negative, just ask yourself... Do I really need to specifiy what the race/sexual orientation/religion to get my point across? If you don't, then why bother bringing it up?

NOW back to "road rage"


liam (my best mate(16 yrs old)) was riding the usual 2km home after school, when almost home he goes down a steep street (200m long) with a bus stop before the bottom (theres a "t" intersetion at da street's end). the street always has parked cars on the roadside so its preety much made a one way street even though its actually preety wide.
whenever the bus destined for the stop is behind liam it slows down so it wont cut him off, well NOT THIS TIME!! :mad: .
liam was forced toward the centre of the road because of the parked cars he had some speed (bout 30km/hr) goin down da hill, he didnt suspect the bus would pass him as it never does and it would bottle neck him, so when it did haul up next to him he shat his dacks being so close to parked cars and a bus which is pushing him towards the cars. the bus hit his bars a more than twice and nearly sent him off :eek: . the passengers in the bus along the window above him were all standing watching not aying anything to the driver obviously :mad: :mad: .
only having one opperating brake (rear and it was a shit house v-brake) meant liam couldent just slow to let the bus pass

liam told me that at one point the bus's rear wheels were right next to him so if he fell (big chance at the time) he would have gone straight under them! :eek:
liam eventually managed to haul the rear brake enough to slow him enough to let the bus pass him then the bus cut him off and forced him up a driveway next to the bus stop.
shaken up, liam walked past the buses open door, the driver didnt even look at him :mad: so he walked past the front of the bus (on his way to cross the road), he was pisssed off so yelled at the drive "nearly killed me ya fu*ken idiot" he didnt get half way through the sentance when his front wheel and arms and handle bars were hit by a passing car :eek: . liam was knock to the ground, he got up looked at the driver (who had skidded to a stop) to see him throw it into gear and speeed away! :mad: :eek:

liam survived with verry minor injuries he was more just annoyed, pissed off and cut at both the bus and car drivers and the fact that his front wheeel was now buckled! :p




i think the best thing do when u are the victim of road rage is to make the driver aware of the error of their ways, or just give their number plate to the cops (dunno if that works),
if we dont tell em what theyve done wrong theyle keep doing it untill little johhny is road kill

we get influenced by things like jack ass and anything that looks like fun to do

teenagers are out of control if you ask me, i think of riding as a sport that ytou should be able to do anywhere without being abused...

for exmaple i rode my bike through skool not too long ago and some little year 8 guys start callin me punk....so what i got an above average bike and a skate helmet and i was wearing my motorbike gloves....does this make me punk?


as for the road rage...everynow and then some idiot complains that your taking up too much space on the road and have to bunny hop onto the footpath....like im talking roads where you have even 3m of room and the pansies cant drive there car past.....

i dont trust the road..id rather ride on the footpath and nock over a pedestrian than get run over by a car

When i did so i took a glance to my side and out of the corner of my eye i saw a Nissan X-Trail right on my ass, less that 40cm away from me i coulda touched it....i quickly put 2 wheels down and went straight of the road .
that was too close for comfort....ride on the foot path with care and i doubt ull have nearly as many problems. Every now and then you might run into a pedestrian but at least they would be more reasonable than somebody in there commodore with the music up too loud.

I know it's an old thread but I need to vent...

Yesterday I has some f@#%wit on a pushi get into a road rage incident with me on a bike path.

I was riding along Moonee Ponds creek in Melb, specifically one of the spots where the bike path passes under a road & the path dips.

These underpasses have a thin (15 to 20cm) concrete ledge either side of them - I was bored & tried to make my commute a little more interesting by riding along this ledge.

I checked behind me first & saw some old dude on a commuter about 50m away, heading towards me slowly. i thought stuff it, rode along the ledge for a few metres (I was only 3ft above the bike path) looked behind me & saw the slow commuter now about 20m behind me & thought I'd better drop off the ledge onto the bike path & get on with it.

So I'm rding along when he catches up with me, pulls up next to me & starts yelling at me to look behind me.

I'm thinking he had a bad morning because there was plenty of space behind me when I dropped off the ledge & this guy was just one of those self-righteous arseholes who needs to assert his authorita every now & then.

So me feeling cheeky decided to match his speed & cruise behind him being just a little bit arrogant - I just said in a sarcastic voice;
'Hmmm, that's funny - I thought the person behind might look ahead - seems the logical thing to do to me..'

No sooner had this left my lips when he slammed on his brakes & skidded to a near halt in front of me and turned around to look at me (sooooooo bright red & foaming at the mouth it was funny).

I had to swerve to avoid him & went to pass on his right, as I passed he grabbed my left arm.

I shook his arm off mine & as I did so, he lost balance of his now very slow bike, got tangled in it ended on a heap on the concrete bike path.

I heard two nice solid thuds as I rode off doing my best Nelson Muntz 'Ha-ha' ...

He had a good ten years on me so he would be 40+ - I reckon it must have hurt too.

I figure it was karma that got him - you don't need to respond to a smart-arse by trying to pull them off their bike.

Oh & before you flame me - I know a bike path at 6:45am is not the appropriate place to be trying something even mildy tricky but I did look behind me...

I had the "get of the foot path" when i am on it...and the "get of the road" when i am on that.....and i hate those bike lanes cause they run down right next to car doors, and i have almost been collected by a couple of car doors becuase car drivers seem to think they are the only people in existence. i generally ride where ever the riding is easier and/or safer depending on whether i feel like crusing or crankin.

If a cop was going the other way and saw you pulling that shit they would have booked your arse. You can manual, cars can do handbrakies. In the eyes of the law the are both driving without due care (or similar offence). You represent the riding community everytime you ride in public. Yeah we all do stupid shit from time to time, but ya can't bitch if your doing stupid stuff at 35kmph in what was probably a 50kmph zone (assuming it was a residenal area).

People are people, they get frustrated on the roads whether they are behind the wheel, on a motorbike or riding a bike. Road Rage isn't limited to cyclist.

I'd be interested in hearing the other side of the story on this one...

C'mon Techno, everyone has been guilty of it, but no one will own up to it.

I have "lost it" at roadies before. 2 side by side taking up a lane. I have no problem with this when it's pre peak hour traffic, but not at 8am on a weekday on a main artery into the CBD.

Of course, if a cyclist is on the road (on any breed of bike) you give he/she the repsect the are entitled to. But I am like everyone else, and have little tolerance for dickheads.

This older guy in question though felt it was warranted to actually GRAB the other person.

I don't know about you, but it would take a damn good reason for me to actually make physical contact with another person in a similar situation.

Just the way the events are told, I wonder what his reasoning was, since that's a definite HUGE escalation in an interpersonal conflict.

i was rideing home on saterday and a hole bunch of dunup cars went passed me ( there was about 20 holdens ) and the only one that gave me shit was in a new ss. so the ones with cash are the assholes

In all of these threads we always seem to conveniently forget that not all bikers follow the rules like us, we are a pure minority. There are millions of kids out there on huffys who break the road rules and piss drivers off, giving us all a bad name.
So while its bad to generalise as has been pointed out, many drivers will just generalise with all bikers, and we just have to deal with it.

I hate the drivers that turn into streets and don’t use their indicators, I have nearly been hit a few times by some dick head that decides that they want to turn at the last minute, and then yell abuse at me because I didn’t know that they were turning. :mad:
