View Full Version : Music Observation

Why is that whenever you watch a MT'Bike, or any other extreme sport style dvd for that matter, the music accompanying it in most cases is very average to say the least??? These guys are out there pushing the limits, how about having music that reflects that. In my opinion there is only one style that meets that criteria and that is \m/ METAL \m/. I'm talking the real shit too, the likes of: Vital Remains, Lost Horizon, Children of Bodom, The Crown, Behemoth etc. I know they are probably trying to increase sales, but for me they would be better off with No music. Which is why in most instances I turn the volume down. That's my $0.02 worth anyway \m/

What does everyone else think \m/

\m/ Moshboy \m/

I think it's very subjective, and any sort of elitism in regards to musical taste is just a load of cockpulling.
For every song you don't like, there'll be people that like it. Deal with it, or show us how to do better.

Here is an idea.
Somedays I hate metal.
Somedays I hate rap.
Somedays I hate homegrown Aussie bands.

So if they made a DVD and used the language selection audio to have different music on different layers, you could customise what music you wanted to listen to, they cold dub the voice, commentary etc over the top.

The 2 flaws I see is that royalities to bands would make it unviable.
You could never get all different style of music to match the rhythm of different sections of the vid.

Maybe the boys at Blackphoenix could....

But then Josh would kill me twice for the edititing nightmare!

Music for vids has to fit the vid... you can go through 100's of songs before you find the "right" one, and even then there will be people who loved it and those who hated it... if you were making a hucks0r3 d0rps0re film, go for whatever music you feel is best... if not, leave it up to the creator - its their damn vid!

Thrashy, metal crap does not in any way reflect what mountain biking is really about. It horrible.. and a majority of MTB'kers hate it. (for that reason there is quite a few shockingly horrible mtb vids on the market)

leave it for motocross. Go learn how to ride a bike, instead of dreaming of having a motor.

I'm glad we have an authority on "what mountain biking is really about" here, so that we can learn all about what music accurately "reflects what mountain biking is really about", as well as what's "horrible" and what's not.

And just out of curiosity, what IS mountain biking really about? I always thought it was about riding and having fun, seems to be more like "what social group am I trying to belong to" at the moment.

IMO many parallels can be drawn between metal and MTB. The roots in the 70's, found its feet in the 80's and powered on to be really strong in the 90's, with technology playing a huge part in it nowadays, and spreading out to cover all sorts of horizons. Participants are white middle class males of the mid-late teens onwards, with of course the "outsiders" coming along to have their fun too. Young, energetic, can be aggressive, you can compare the two fairly easily through my eyes.

Says a bogan metalhead who just went to a kickarse rock show, and is now listening to dub. All music is good in its own way, there'll always be lovers of certain genres, as well as haters. To get on the attack and blast a filmmaker for making what they want to make is a bit rich, and considering the target market, it seems fair that they do what they do.

lol, gold.. I hate metal but i can see what Moshboy means by having metal alongside an 'extreme' video. Classical wouldn't suit i don't think.

2 words Carmina Burana. Or check out any of Apocalyptica's stuff (especially their cover songs) And there is many many more that would easily suit some clean as footage. Or/and, an opening sequence with the sunlight peering over the mountains, birds chirping, water flowing and then some nasty arse biker plowing down the country side.....I need a freaking camera!

Personally Im glad to see so many metal haters, stops it becoming popular and thus being a constant thorn in my side during the day on commercial radio. I wish the Nando's chicken would take Ben Lee's guitar and smash it over a pole \m/ \m/ :D See and I almost avoided the words hate and commercial tripe shit in the same sentence. lol

Oh and with the music for videos and the lets jump on the hate train......soft punk blows balls, rap doesnt work and drum and bass dont even get me started. hehe

ie, manufactured music.

It's still a very subjective topic - ie the masses buy this "manufactured" music, so technically, music being an art form, it is good music (to the people that buy it anyway)

I think there should be more actual mountain music in videos, stuff like yodelling or John Denver singing that rocky mountain high song!
Dudes in lederhosen yodelling their asses off would be funny, or a Julie Andrews type spinning around singing 'the hills are alive with the sound of mtbs'!!!

Seriously though, the background music doesn't really worry me. Just as long as it isn't Linkin Smack or Limp Bikkies or Good Chocolate or any of those teenie pop-rock type bands.
I wouldn't mind hearing some old school metal like Iron Maidens 'Run to the hills' or something by Kraftwerk or old JB's, anything that channel V wouldn't play.
I liked 'The Collective' for it's track selection because it was so different from the usual mtb vid style.

I was Kidding...
MTB is only about having fun nothing else, (doesn't mean that all mtbkers get along and agree with each other though) I do find it difficult to find a connection between riding a MTB and Heavy rock/punk metal music..

unless your Bender, doesn't seem to really fit :(
I know I'm no bender.. I can admit to that :D
Bring on more movies like NWD5 and Collective, both IMO are well selected music for the tone of the film and footage.

warning: post contains blatant stereotyping

mention deathmetal and I think "COOOOKIEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! UMNUMNUMNUM..."

I'm not a fan of 'music' that sounds like you're driving through an industrial area at 200km/h with your head out the window - or has lyrics along the lines of "give me a fluffy bunny, so that I may simultaneously sodomise it and disembowel it with a rusty spoon.''

but hey, if someone else does like it, fair enough. Sort of.

heavy shit has a place in bike video soundtracks - but it's only one style of music amongst many.

a bike (or any action sports / extreme sports / insert other marketing term here) video filled with thrash metal comes across as "omgz0r we r so fully sik for liek doin these wikkid dropz yo do u want my autograff live fast die young run red lights and piss off ppl"

whereas a more diverse soundtrack - with some heavy stuff, some not so heavy stuff, even some chilled stuff (e.g. the Collective) seems more to say "hey, this is our sport and our lives - sure it can be dangerous and crazy, but it's just normal to us. There is some soul to this as well. We're not Pepsi Max adrenaline junkies, tripping out on caffeine and media spotlights."

At work, any bike video with too much thrash in it gets taken out of the DVD player by our manager. He's a roadie, and by his own admission has never been to a concert in his life - but it's a fair call, crush/kill/destroy music doesn't make for a comfortable retail environment.

Moshboy, if you don't like bike video soundtracks:
- Install DVD drive in computer
- Run DVD program muted
- select music as you wish from media player program of choice
- give a little more respect to the fact that most of us do like them

problem solved.

They dont make shit music, and people blatantly stereotyping metal listeners ( and music listeners in general) need to be slapped about the face. Its all subjective, so arguing that some kind of music is more "cool for mtb riders" is completely counterproductive.

IF you want metal in a bike vid, try to get a copy of RTTH, it has simmu borgir and Metallica on it.

Yep, what music works is entirely down to the video and the viewer, nobody can say this or that is the one style of music for mtb videos.

I was only kidding around about the finnish metallers, just a couple had been mentioned, thats all..

My Blanket Statement:
Every now and then someone comes on and says basically the same thing the thread-starter did here. Normally its just that someone gets to 15 or so and hears something different to the norm of their parents stuff- add in some teenage angstiness and all of a sudden you have your "metal blah blah metal is where its at [insert semi popular not quite mainstream acts with weird names often from europe] are teh best !!!111onewtf666".
'tis my theory.
