Can't you just get roaming on your current phone?
Speak to your service provider, it shouldn't be a big deal.

If you get international roaming on your current phone make sure you ban incoming calls and only allow sms.
Any incoming call will be charged to them at their normal rate, then you get charged for the call from here to wherever you are in the world. Very expensive!
The best way I've found to be mobile O/S is to buy a prepaid sim card over there. MUCH cheaper.

That really depends on who you have your mobile in Australia with, and what network you are roaming on while overseas. I was overseas recently and didn't get charged a cent for inbound calls or SMS.

I'm pretty sure Vodafone has a roaming option. Goto Kmart and ask them if they have any Vodafone prepaid packs on clearence.
About a month ago we had a few Nokia 3315's with $30 pre paid credit on vodafone for $35!
