i am just noticing peopel riding with out front brakes on their bike and wanted to no why does it help them ?
is it just because they dont need it or for weight ?

- Commitment.
Force yourself into the last-second choice of hitting up something or probably crashing into it without being able to stop. Which one are you going to take?
- less stuff to break if you crash.
- the simplicity of one brake, one gear is fun too - you stop thinking about silly things like optimum gear selection, and just ride.

well i dunno bout most ppl but only reason im riding without a front brake atm is cos my juicy 5 cable is too short and i cant afford to replace it :(

my front brake cable snapped.
thats the only reason why i ride front brakeless.....i didnt think i used them until i broke them, but im used to it now so i dont care (my bike is a p.o.s anyway)
Riding front brakeless makes you better rider.
Front brakes allow you do easy tricks that look good, like endos, stoppies & nose pivots. Take off the front brake & you realise that all the hard tricks rely mainly on rear brakes or no brakes. So if you, like me, can't bunnyhop high, manual, abubaca etc then all you really do while on a ride is watch people session different spots. This is a great motivational tool to make you learn new tricks, that are actually difficult. And so you become a better rider.
Then when you are good you can put a front brake back on & quickly learn the few tricks you need a front brake for.
*Backwards nosewheelies down slopes are very hard & you do need a front brake to do those.

:D my opinion is that its silly to take it off... front brake has like 70% stopping power, wat would u rather do break ur bike, or have a front break and live ( that is if ur about 2 crash and u cant stop in time) :D

when I ride skateparks and dirt jumps I generally dont even use breaks.
taking your front break off looks better, gives more room on handlebars, reduces cable rub and front breaks are just another thing that bangs around and makes your bike sound bad.
I think if in your style of riding a front break helps then you should have it, but if you dont use it why bother having it?

Reduce cable rub? LOL! If you run your front brake cable around your frame and back down again to the dropouts, you've got problems.
Meh, i like my front brake :p, and by looking at the paint that has come off my levers it looks like i use my front brake more than my back.

Sameo, my front brake crapped out and I ran front brakeless for a few months... annoying when you want to stop fast in the CBD, incidentally. Now with Juicy 5 I love my front brake again. Personally, unless you are a serious DJer, running front brakeless is a very stupid wank. In any environment, it is impossible to stop well and hard with only a rear brake, and can result in some serious collisions with other big moving objects when riding on the street.
I'm going to take both brakes off and DH. On my rigid. :(
Yeah, I used to only run a rear V brake on my old Dirt Jump bike, until I cracked the frame. Only really did it because I didn't have a spare brake for the front. Now that I think about it I didnt really need one that much either.

its good to have front brake to stop if ur in rythms. like if u stuff up... but not entirely necessary. most rythms n oz r so small it doesn't matter if ur smooth or not haha

when riding rhythms, park and street, you dont realy need to stop that much, so you can save your money, etc. although, sometimes things go wrong, and someone gets in the way or something, and youll wish you had a front brake, but you gotta take the bads with the goods.
i personally wouldnt run a front brake on a DJ/street bike, i dont see or feel the need for it, plus, i found that running a rear brake only when i had a HT that it has tought me to properly stop, and ive learnt exactly how far away from thngs to brake and stuff to stop exactly in time.
sometimes its good to sacrifice something for a while to help your skill levels, im planing on getting a BMX or somethin as my next street bike not only to save money and stuff, but i think it will help out my skill, and then when i get another HT for street, i should be smoother, and will of hopefully gained some skill.
and ofcoarse it makes things soo much simpler, i had a SS setup with only a rear brake, nothing to worry about.

i used to ride without a front brake for about 8 months (but that was about 2 years ago) just because i couldnt afford a disc brake and i didnt have V mounts..
now that i have my hardtail going again i dont run a front brake just because i would only rarely use it. i like having my whole hand on the right grip for DJing and streetish stuff.. if i was racing bikerX or something i would put a front brake on again.
Red Rocket on here rode for a while with no front brakes...He still rode really well. Only had them off to bleed them or get new pads or something... but anyway,

does anyone run no front brakes but still have their rotor on? icurrantly have an 8 inch but only coz i cant get one of the bolts out. has anyone ridden the jumps that wakka is sessioning in earthed2 and aslo feature in a recent amb?
I rode front-brakeless for ages because the disc mount was cracked - it sucked when you DO need to stop fast (and those are the situations you DON'T predict or encounter at dirtjumps/skateparks, they're the ones when a car pulls out in front of you etc), and didn't offer any actual advantage. I could understand if there's a reason why you can't put front brakes ON a bike (eg non-disc hub/non-v-brake fork, or it's broken or whatever) or you can't afford to do so when you build a bike up... but to actually go to the effort of REMOVING them, why bother? Leave it on - if it gets trashed or whatever, who cares, you didn't use it anyway remember?
RCOH: surprisingly enough, having a front brake doesn't stop the rear brake from doing its job. You can do rear-brake-specific tricks WITHOUT taking your front brake off! What an age we live in... :p
Farkus: "Think" about one brake? Braking isn't something you can do instinctively/intuitively like 99.9% of the rest of the world?
S. i can disagree, i rode my stp for the past 5 months, i only ever had one situation where i would have liked to have a front brake. car related. i found runnin front brakeless increased reaction speeds to car and pedestrian related situations, and in the skatepark, if the people have any idea of etiquette there aint much chance of runnin into other ppl.

Its up to the individual and how they like there bike set up. There is no right or wrong in this case, just preferance. Personally Im going to run back brake only when I get my new single crowns, its going to be a test to see if I do like it. Im sure an eight inch back brake will pull me up.

I thought running front brakeless was a carry over from BMX racing (not advisable to run a front brake unless you like front flips). When people moved over from BMX to DJ and street it was just natural to not run a front brake.

the less shit to worry about the easier it is to concentrate. It makes you improve heaps as well. You try nose manuals and stuff (without a brake) and your balance improves.
And when you stack you dont get brake fluid in your eyes.

yeah i love riding with just a back brake. Then you put on a single speed and everything becomes so simple. You dont have to worry about changing gears and it makes bar spins easier and you dont have only have to worry about 1 brake when your braking.

runnin no front brake has fuck all to do with barspinning, gear changes, (u mount ur front brake through ur steerer, and ur gear cable is simply ziptied to ur brake) there is a pic on the page before last post.
um actually u have to think more with one brake, rather than ur front brake that takes most of the braking force, with rear only u have to brake earlier for longer to stop without skidding and leanin back, so actually runnin rear brake only is more of a hassle.

i do dirt and street and i run both front and back. hydro discs being my preference.
I can see why alot of people run one brake for DJ, but i really don't see the point in running only a rear for street. I personally prefer to ride technical street rather than the boring old drops and stair gaps crap so i find the front brake extremely helpful. Suppose you could say my version of "street" is with a bit of trials mixed in.
i reckon the whole no brake thing is a bit of an ego trip though for alot of people. some people genuinely don't need it or use it. others don't run it coz it makes them look hardcore! haha

Mmmmmm i'm going to have to disagree with this, if i were to build up a trials bike, then it would definatly have a front brake on it, as do 99.9% of trials bikes, off the top of my head, 270's off drops, upping things to front wheel, then 'hoo-haa'ing to rear wheel, endo'ing off things, endo'ing onto other ledges and many other trials moves which my bad memory cant remember
if trials didnt need a front brake, why would all (well... i think all) pro's run a front brake?
Just my opinion on trials without a front brake, people feel free to argue on not running one for trials,.

i know a friend who has a gyro, it makes street riding more worse, because the cable keeps flicking out, so he had to put tape around his gyro and it stops. The thing is he doesn't use the gyro. but i know people who prefer cable disc brakes for street rather than hydros, cause easier to fix and cheaper.

it will however make you a better rider, it makes you pick ur lines better and become more committed to a line, f*ck it up, you make damm well sure you do it properly next time! and i know this is a F.A.C.T! i know if you stack it, you then have no controll over the bike, whos to say the bars wont spin round more than twice( this applies with rear brake) and rip a cable??? i take this risk, but without it there, you dont worry about ur bike when u stack it!, and as someone said, having a"full hand" :D:D:D on ur bars cant b beat! i rode with no brakes for a few months and it improved my skills alot! you dont realise you dont need brakes untill you dont have them! it also will make help you pull off killer manuals, :D now i just run rear hydro only, no front cos..... i just dont need it, and something less to worry bout/replace. nothing better than the joy of just hopping on ur rear-braked only, single speed bike and hammering away with not a worry in the world!

Yeah, i think youll find that most people ride down steep hills, i have never had to resort to using my feet unless im trying to look like a fool - either
A) you cant use your brakes effectively
B) your bakes lock up from your extremely buffed fingers.
I went fully brakeless for a fair while and its simply a matter of adaptation, without a a front brake you put more emphasis with your weight over the rear whilst you dont have to compensate for that at all with front -
I definately recomend only back if you are serious about street and all that.
(personal whinge - "street/urban/extreme street manoevres = grinds, ledges, manuals, skateparks and "some" drops - thats true street....not riding down stairs and hucking twenty stairs and hucking off roofs. :) )

Safety wise, its better to have front brake, you have two wheels thats in contact with the ground, the rear brake has less stopping power, front brake off really doesnt make it a great thing.
I'd rather be safe then sorry, also having 2 brakes and using it also saves on your rear tyre from wearing out much more quicker then the front. Seeing that i run minions for everything i do :) .... well ive got larseenTT and holy rollers coming, but for the moment, tyres cost money and i would rather spend it on other stuff the worn out wheel due to it locking up more often.
But running front brakeless is a preference, do it if you feel you don;t need your front brake, not because you see people do it.
I ride without a helmet because i don;t need it....... or its koool that is untill i got cleaned up by a car/tree/curb anything.
No front brake does have the potential for great disaster.

The reason why they dont have front brakes is for tricks
If they are single speed and dont have front brakes they can do barspins and X-ups easier
plus they dont really need all the brake power provided by the front brake for Dirt jumping
But I personally think that its safer and better to ride with front and rear brakes

sorry jezza that aint true in my case, i bought the brakes 2nd hand n the hydro cable for my front juicy 5 wasnt long enough n i couldnt afford to replace it
BUT NOW IM BORROWING MONEY OFF PARENTALS and finally getting it on, so i'll be out of this catagory.
but yeh some are for tricks, some cant afford it like me, some prefer it without a front. most just dont feel the need, especially on street, n dj bikes cos u dont need massive amounts of braking power.
