Anthing can snap though.

My bro just snapped my old ride. An 02 P3. But it certainly helps to buy the right bike in the first place :)

2 GT STS's.
But didn't they all break?

Rik

Sorry, sorry, I apologise about my earlier statement.

I have broken one bike, my steel F.Moser roadie. Cracked it at the join of the seatstay and seat tube. Mind you, that was the era that my sprint was at its best and I rode like a nutter, and also perfected rear wheel hops on it.
I finish a race, thinking something felt a bit sluggish, and when packing the bike away, my brother informed me that I'd inadvertantly made it a softtail

I snapped one of them too. Was pretty cool feeling at the time, i was like, hey i must ride so hard how cool am I. Then I got a Rainer on warranty & this time I snapped the chain stay learning to do some trials manuvers. This time warranty wasn't so gracious in giving me another frame (funny they must be able to tell when your lying, "no I don't do jumps on my bike" ;-)) anyways while I was saving for a new rig I borrowed my girlfriends brother's Giant Rincon & needless to say I eventually snapped it (sorry dude).

Now I just got to save a few quid and Mr GripSport is going to fix them up making them stronger than when they were new!

I've broken a GT timberline (forks and frame), cracked a Mongoose Amplifier, cracked two Avanti Moto AFXs. I only weigh 65-70 kgs and ride like a sissy so I put all of these down to either bad luck or cheap machinery. Now I've got a Crafty 208 and a Norco 125 and they're both stronger than me.

YeeeeHaaa! Now... can we fit London AND Paris in this year???? Hmmm

And while on the subject of broken bikes... I could probably afford to lose a FEW kilos (shut up anyone who knows me!) but the only bike I've ever killed beyond repair was a moto that snapped BOTH sides of the handlebars at once after landing a jump. Farkin thing took off like a squealin pig that thought I was a hillbilly trying to root it... with me face down on the tank, legs out the back, arms down either side... and of course the throttle stuck about as wide open as a tart's walkers. Probably would have been OK 'cept for the big cliff and the even bigger "lake" at the bottom of that. Anyone here know the old Mooraduc Quarry (down the Mornington Peninsula way)? Anyone here got a grappling hook?

That one took a bit of explaining to mum!

I snapped my old 'Goose NX8.1 (one of the old Newman frames) on the RHS chainstay just infront of the weld at the dropouts.

It was my first "real" mountain bike and I broke it doing things that really should not be done on a XC frame.

Where are all these frames now?

And

Even if they're totally dead (which you know I don't believe) I did put this post up....

I snapped a Giant Warp DS3. They replaced the frame and then the swing arm went. replaced that and then the frame cracked again. Doin freeride duties on a 20inch warp is not good for the soul. I also screwed a set of RS indy XC forks, Jetts and now I have Psylo XC (2000 model i think) and they rock, take all the shit I throw at them.

What snotty fails to mention is that the only reason it broke is from the lower crown hitting the frame in a heavy crash. Interestingly he's still riding the same frame. We just patched it up with a bit (ok a lot) more carbon wrapped around the break.

We've done about four or five of these... all snapped in similar area. Some for Apollo themselves as warranty others just from bike shops for their customers. Bottom line is that even Apollo Bicycles can't get replacements and if people don't want to replace their entire bike then there's really no option for them. When you think about it even a $200 repair to keep a bike you like going is way cheaper than the big bucks for a new frame or complete bike.

No. Only ever had a couple of Konas in for repair... then again compared with mass market brands like Giant etc there's not THAT many of them out there so don't take our experience as an indication of quality. But having said that, most Konas are ridden pretty hard from what I've seen, so they must be pretty tough... or maybe they break like glass and people simply throw them away???? I don't know.

jays_5000, being in Tassie makes no difference whatsoever. As long as the frame comes to us per our intructions we do a FLAT RATE of $20 to get your frame to us and then back to your door anywhere in the country.
PLEASE don't make me say it all again about getting frames just "welded" up (rather than repaired properly)... I don't care WHO fixes your frame... simply "welding" it WILL MAKE IT WEAKER THAN IT WAS... so for farks sake use the search function here on the forum and read everything that's been said about repairing frames.
If you want us to do it call on (03) 9437 1954 and I can price it over the phone for you.
Cheers

OK... good clear pics and easy to price from. $160 for the repair and $20 for freight... all-up total of $180. and currently approx one week turnaround for the repair.
That involves some fairly heavy duty gussets tying the whole area of downtube to headtube to toptube. Very common repair... in fact we did almost exactly the same on an Elsworth Specialist just this morning (although his also involved re-aligning the headtube to increase the angle by 2.5 degrees after a serious head-on tried to fold his forks back behind him)

Case number 3287 that I've heard of and another example of why frames need to be REPAIRED PROPERLY... You CAN NOT JUST WELD UP A FRAME!!!!! Stop trying... don't go to "the local welding joint"... don't expect ANY $40 repair to last more than 5 minutes... stop being a bunch of tight arses and get it REPAIRED properly (no matter who you get to do it!)

So endeth the sermon... from the book of metals according to Saint Alloy, verse 3, chapter 12... amen.

Yeah, but grip - you cant forget the fun factor - to weld your own up just makes it even more your own - like when you snap your bike or even just break some part on your bike - doesnt it feel better to fix it yourself - instead of just being the breadwinner paying out money to let other people have all the fun?? You might not agree cause you actually fix the bikes, but even simple things like the other day i stuffed my rear hub and went down to the bike shop to get some things to fix it, and they're like "Nah, we dont recommend you doing it yourself", my friend and I did fix it (and we payed more on tools than a new hub costs) but it was fun - so i say boycott the bike shops - DIY!!!

Hmmm... thanks Rik... I needed that today like I needed a hole in the head (live_2_ride knows what I'm talking about there). Actually I really want people to know what is and isn't possible and AS I SAID IN MY POST "no matter who you get to do it!" So if my post sounded like a promo and annoyed you my apologies... I suppose it's a bit hard to give advice and opinions when people know what you do for a crust... I'll keep quiet now.

And "awesomninity" my main concern about DIY is the safety factor, but you're 100% right... gotta have some fun and there's nothing like DIY to learn and satisy
Cheers

Yeah, but there's a slight difference between rebuilding a hub and welding a head tube back on; for one, I'd say there's slightly less chance of ripping your face open on jagged metal if your hub packs it in....

I started out with road bikes, first eva was shogun ninja into a traffic island at approx 50Kph (bent the frame a little)
then bought a vetta italia frame, day I paid it off I went up the arse of a removal van so lucky I didn't kill myself, thought the owner was going to though. (frame totally wasted) so I turned to mountain bikes.

If anyone can remember these (GT RTS) fractured downtube up near the steerer tube. (frame no good)
secondly the old sintesi xtr equipped bike from early 1990's (I only bought the frame) 1 slight fracture on weld between steerer tube & downtube, we got that fixed properly & I believe it still kicken around somewhere.
thirdly the worldforce downhill bike (people still reckon it was Chris kovarik's old frame) went out to wamuran one day to do some fireroad runs, hit this waterbar at least over 60Kph, bike shot across track at least 60 degree's to the right, into a tree (approx 90mm in diameter) tore it out of the ground (no-joke I have 2 witnesses to prove this, I even asked them to film me coming down the track before this happened, never happened though. Was a little dissappointed not to see it on film) Then about 6 Months later I raced Ipswich on this same bike & snapped it against the tree at the bottom of the drop off.

I know all this may sound unbelievable but I have at least the worldforce to still prove I broke it. I may still have one of the road bike frames but not to sure.

Well i snapped my old KHS frame at the top of the downtube. I was just riding along when i heard noises as i wiggled the handlebars from side to side.

I had just raced it at the nationals at Mt Buller and the bike was fully rigid This was in about 97. I was the only unsprung racer there. Amid the jeers of the onlookers at my puny equipment, i was having a wild bumby ride. My brakes didn't work either. What can you do when you're poor an keen?

Frame got fixed on warranty - so did brakes - cant complain.

snapped a 200 giant atx840 downtube...gotta love xc bikes

I snapped one of them too. Was pretty cool feeling at the time, i was like, hey i must ride so hard how cool am I. Then I got a Rainer on warranty & this time I snapped the chain stay learning to do some trials manuvers. This time warranty wasn't so gracious in giving me another frame (funny they must be able to tell when your lying, "no I don't do jumps on my bike" ;-)) anyways while I was saving for a new rig I borrowed my girlfriends brother's Giant Rincon & needless to say I eventually snapped it (sorry dude).

Now I just got to save a few quid and Mr GripSport is going to fix them up making them stronger than when they were new!

yeh i snapped my atx aswell...around the head tube

Well I've already had my head chewed off already for replying to a thread that someone else dug up, so why not do it again....

On one hand I got blasted for not doing a search on a common topic, but if you do and you dig it up you get blasted as well....

What gives kids????

BTW, Grip made a comment about the length of seatpost extended causing a cracked frame. What is the info on all that???
