Yeah i have just a tube rapped round it but you can also use some neoprene like a bit of a wet suite.
i use the tube method also, works great, costs practically nothing and gets rid of the annoying ssound of chain on stay. Plus it looks awesome if your old tube has heaps of patches on it.

Yup tube and a cable tie, easy.
I used an old thick leather garden glove that I cut up - oooo genuine leather chainstay protector!

I used to have an old bit of plastic pipe (the watering system stuff) that I got off my oldies - it fit perfectly and as per usual a coupla cable ties to hold it on.

I use neoprene, but not the foamed neoprene like wetsuit, the 2mm thick solid stuff often called "insertion rubber". Hold it in place with cable ties.
Can buy it from Clark Rubber, can't remember how much though.

I've tried different things, and found that Lizard Skins seems to work the best. The next best thing is wrapping the chain stays in hockey stick tape. However, I don't know how many people play hockey down under, so it may hard to find.

I got an old crappy tyre and zip tied it to my chainstay. Works a dream, there is no noise and looks pretty cool. I dont have any photos though cause i converted my bike to single speed therefore i dont need one.
That 'old tyre' idea is a good one... it'll look pretty cool too!

inner tube n zip ties
i had a Lizard-Skins neoprene one, but one that you buy will never be perfect fit.
Now i have an old tube wrapped tightly around (no added area use) with 4 zip ties, which is really good
