I had 01 Psylos on mine, the stock Judy's on the Avalanche 1.0 are shit. Marzocchi is the way to go if you want to do drops and stuff but I would recommend looking into some Dukes. Dirt jumpers are the gear if they are going to have a hard life.

Dirt Jumpers are a jumping fork (shock horror) and have a damping circuit which was designed accordingly. While they are great for their designed purpose, you will find forks (even in zoocchi's own lineup) which will be much better suited to trail riding as you described.

no matter what you are on a xc bike just remember that
yup get yourself some 2003 duke xcs with u turn !!
they have 110mm travel for the downhill, and 80mm for the xc !!
and they are a pretty damn strong fork !!
