Hi guys,
I have a couple of questions regarding Monsters.
I had a look at the Marzocchi web site for some specs and pics,
but I guess I'm calling on a bit of experiance from those that have tried and tested the product.
One of my slight concers with the fork itself is the lowers protruding beyond the axle. I have seen one person with these forks, and looked at the many dents on the very low point of the forks.
Why would it be that they stopped making the shorter version like the '02, that didn't have the overhang?
I'm aware of the weight factor, but I'd like to get a tough set of forks, so I guess Its a small price to pay.
Does any body have an Idea of local cost of the Monsters?
I will end up asking my LBS, but I just want to know what I'm in for.
Cheers
The 2002 Model Monsters used Dual HSCV Carts, same carts basically in the Shivver DC, SC, Super T, current model Z1 FR series ect.
in 03/04/05 I believe they went to Dual Shivver Motocross cartridges, and also increased the travel by 25mm.
the 02 models, had preload and rebound adjustment only.
in 03 with the new Motocross carts,
they added high and low speed compression adjustments,
as well as rebound and preload. (not sure on preload)
the legs are longer on the new ones, to help compensate for the new carts and the extension in travel.
the downside of the 03/04/05 model is that they are about a kg heavier
than the previous years models, so that superior damping capability in the newer model does come at a price.. a stupidly heavy fork!

The 99-02 style weighed 9 pounds (wringing wet) whereas the newer (03-05) ones are around 12 pounds.

with the 03-05 ones the reason the lowers stick down below the axle is because teh stanchions are insanely long and you can convert them to 12" travel (super monster) just by getting new cartridges and springs, the stanchions are long enough... not the best idea IMO because so few people are ever gonna do it but i guess they will still be tougher to wreck hitting on on a rock than that stupidly oversised adjuster on 40s that sticks down like 3" below the axle and is just some flimsy thing that would probably snap off first hit
disclaimer: i have no idea how the adjuster on the 40s would hold up but looking at it it looks weak as piss

Well...
Apparently groupsportif don't have Monsters (but they do have SUPERS)until '06s arrive.
So I did some searching and chainreaction in the UK have the best price.
But I'm a bit worried about the whole interenet thing - with the import duties and then the G.S.T. on top of everything. They'll end up being around the $1500 mark, or so I've guesst'o'mated.
But at that price I guess it's worth a gamble.....

If you want monster T's track down some pre-03 ones. As Daver said they weight over 3lbs less and are plenty strong. They weigh 9.5 pounds. For your info
99 - Dual externally controllable rebound carts and preload. Compression changed by oil weight
00 - One externally controllable rebound cart and one externally controllable compression cart and preload. This fork sometimes "locked up" on heavy hits as the holes in the base of the compression cartridge are a little undersized so oil couldn't flow out locking the cartridge. You can drill or put in 5wt oil to fix.
01 - Same as 99, went back to this design after the probs with the 00's
02 - Addition of HSCV to cartridges. For all purposes they feel 95% the same as 99's and 01's but they are slightly better and are the most sought after monsters. Dual externally controllable rebound carts and preload. Compression changed by oil weight
03 to 05 - Use shiver moto carts. All extrenally adjustable high low speed compression, rebound and preload. Shim stack can also be modified.
I ride on the older monsters. I have a set of mint 02's and a set of 00's that i just picked up for spare parts. Been riding around on the 00's to see if i can tell the differance and i can feel that the fork does tend to feel a little bit harsher.
So, go for 99, 01 or 02's. There are some on Australian ebay at the moment.
And to let you in on a secret the older monsters can be modified to make them around 8.5pounds.

My brother just got one, and he loves it. I've ridden his bike, and it feels really plush, and it didn't really feel too heavy to me. He rides a Big Hit, even with the 24" rear wheel, it doesn't feel too raked out.
The nice part is that they are cheap right now. My bro got his (brand new) for $480 (US).

Where'd he get them for that price?
