I dunno but my guees is that a lot of the bmxers at the moment are running them because they dont want to crank hard.
Usually while they are in the middle of a run they are travelling at quite a speed, not starting from a stationary point.
So chuck a couple of cranks in with one of these and your speed has increased a fair bit with next to no effort. Do the same thing with a dinnerplate and you will need to make more cranks to get to the same speed and they wont be as smooth.

Ive only seen a few mountainbikes running them lately.
I rekon heaps of kids will get them pretty soon with the whole be like a bmx but not a bmx thing.

usually to save weight and to increase crank clearance.

see, you can run the same ratio as 44-16 or whatever if you scale the driver and ring down accordingly. will feel the same, but look different.

also, more ring clearance is handy on nasty crooked grinds and if doing a lot of tech street where you might accidentally bash the ring into something.

but the main purpose is weight.

That explains why guettler has one, he would have to have one of the lightest bikes around. That thing is insane.

The ratio I am running is 22:13, using tuff nek ss hub. Tyres are soon to be DMR Motos, current Hookworms (24" x2.5") are way too heavy.

The main reason i run this set-up is because when I built the bike I only had a 22 or 44 tooth chainrings to choose from, & as I ride mainly street & DJ these days 44 was a bit tall.

There are positives & negatives: quick acceleation vs pain in the ass to get anywhere ( this my everything, including commuter, bike). Nice clearance when trying to bunnyhop up/over things, but chainring bashie combo is too small to sprocket grind, the ledge always ends up grinding on the chain & yoke. But it looks nice & clean & I am used to it now.
