Cheers for all the input.

they are generally an xc crank......... but heaps of people are using for dh without any issues.

especially now with the hollowtech II system, they're tough as nails. also an alternative to saints as they are cheaper and saints don't fit into crank mounted shuttle trailers.

some food for thought.

I use XT on my DH / FR bike, they're awesome.

Light and strong, what more could you ask for?

long as your're gettin newies..ie outward facing bearing jobbies. had old school octalink on my FR bike a while back, and the XT's didn't hold up too long. I wanna get the new ones on my DH tho, they look trick, light and reportedly pretty stiff an strong!

another vote here - I'm running XT Hollowtech II cranks and an SRS.
Light, stiff, strong, fits into shuttle trailers (with the usual odd scratch).

I ran into a bit of a problem with setting them up though - I had to space out the non drive side BB cup a fair way to get a decent chainline.
With all those spacers, the stock Shimano cup was only grabbing into the BB shell by about 4 or 5 threads - dodgy.
I'm now running a nice gold Diabolus BB instead, as the threads run much further into the BB shell. (Yep, they're available separately.)
The chainline is still a bit suss - hence I'm running a Rohloff chain, as they allow for more lateral flex/sideload under power.

If you're having trouble fitting the backplate to a longer travel duallie, you may have to grind it down somewhat to get around the swingarm / linkage.
e13 also make a 'Gemini' backplate - they've basically done the grinding for you.
