12.2 gig of mp'3 hooked up to a Denon Amp that weighs 20kg hooked up to Uber Sennheiser earphones. These things crank so damn loud they may aswell be small speakers. They shake on my head and my mate 2 walls away can hear it. Great for watching dvd's late at night and doesnt get the neighbours coming round with a baseball bat!!!

If it's not late, the main system kicks in. teehee

12 inchs of pure vinal picked up by a shure or ortofon stylis on Techniques 1200s through a stanton S2KF mixer feeding a m-audio 4/4 i/o sound card mixed internally within the breakout box then feed back out to a techniques su-x101 amp conneceted to Cervin Vega monitors or AKG 240 studio headphones

no point in listening to MP3s coming off a consumer soundcard on a expensive sound system system.

I just bought some Logitech Z680's (5.1 surround). DTS, prologic 2....all hooked up via optic connection (so i can listen to stereo music in 5.1). Lots of cool features, great for DVD's. I also got some nice Sony CD580 headphones which have a gorgeous sound and are so comfy.

funky little altec lansig speakers, only 25 W all up but the go harder than my grandfathers 120W ones, mores the better. no real stereo atm, just a $5 speaker from lifeline hooked up to a discman and a walkman, but i haven't got round to building the amp for it yet so it doesn't go too loud. that doesn't really matter though cause my sister owns the house i live in and she bought herself a sony component dvd stereo which is staying here when she goes overseas - cool.

Nice setup Ty, I'd love a set of Cerwin Vega monitors, they're very nice, nice car speakers too.

Don't get too stressed about comparing wattages though people, so many companies stamp their systems with PMPO figures it's not funny. Even comparing RMS values can be a bit of a wank. I know that when I run one of dad's 50W amps through a Marshall quad, or one of his boxes (4 12" Celestion Greenbacks) it makes more noise at half load than any of the 1200W home stereo's I've listened to. Just a thought.

my view on home stereo is a bit askewed compared to most peple but i can't see the reason anyone spends more than $2000 on a pair of speakers to fill a average bedroom/study/computer room, yamaha NS-10 nearfeild studio monitors ($2000 a side) are pretty much the standard reference for studio monitors and chances are your favorite song was mixed using these speakers, therefore i don't see why anyone would need speakers that cost more than the speakers used to orignal mix the music with.

once you move out of the near field position and your pushing more than 115 dB then it's a different story.

keep in mind mine aren't in my bedroom Ty. I have a Pioneer mini system for that. Mine have to fill my whole house(and back yard on party days) with music.........i'd never get any cleaning done without some decent tunes pumping through the house.

Gutty, like i said, once you get out of the nearfleid (close) listening postion and it gets really loud it's a different story, i hope it didn't sound like i was refering to your pervious post above mine, it ws just a general comment.

Ty, I disagree with your comments on speakers. For starters, studio monitors usually perform like crap in a home environment. They are often too bright. They are designed for a studio environment, which is not what most people's rooms are like. I'd put my speakers head to head against those Yamaha's in the average lounge room anyday. If you'd like to stop by and hear bliss, let me know. And it has nothing to do with volume.

But I do agree with you Ty, that MP3's suck ass on a good system.

Kram you should note a few things, i said "bedroom/study/computer room" and "once you move out of the near field position and your pushing more than 115 dB then it's a different story." it just seems like most of the people here were refering to the system the use at their computer, which would place them in a close nearfield style listening enviroment which nearfield studio monitors are designed for. the new powered ns-10s (nsp-10) have a built 3 band parametric eq to try and deal with any problems with minor room acoustic problems such as brightness caused by highly reflective surfaces (of course your not going to be able to remove a standing wave etc with a EQ)

i guess it just comes down to what your used to, my personal perference for speakers is dyna audio AiRs for close enviroments or EAW or Martin Audio on crown amps for bigger venues but like anything it's purely subjective.

Yeah, sorry Ty. I didn't quite catch your drift the first time. I thought you were referring to any internal room of a home and that by out of near field you meant in entertainment venues and outdoors.

So I actually agree with you after all.

it's all good, for lounge sized home hi-fi i don't know shit, (i should really learn about it though)

heres a interesting little article that apeared in sound on sound* a while back on home speakers vs monitors

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Jun02/articles/monitors.asp?session=b583c357f61c194e8b0944baa24d8 3fc

(sound on sound is pretty much a bible for pro audio gear because it has no advertisers so they remain totaly unbias, wouldn't it be cool if mountain biking had a service like that)

My setup is kind of a hybrid home theatre/music system.

Sherwood 300w (RMS) Reference Speakers
Jensen Millenium Edition surrounds (centre, surround, rear lef/right)
Onkyo SR-900 amp

Nothing else that's in any way impressive.

Although I'm looking into a reference turntable in the very near future.

Neither dude... just output from your PC sound card to a stereo amplifier.

You need a Hi Fi store.

Hrm, SB Live! 5.1 (not the value one, but then that doesn't make much difference anyway), feeding coax digital into my Harmon Kardon AVR3000 receiver, which then feeds into, wait for it, 4 * 6.5inch car audio drivers, and cheap shitty one's at that (as in about $20 total value for all 4). I want to get some Aaron's or maybe some Klipsche when i finish paying for all my other expensive hobbies....
and 30gb of MP3's.
