View Full Version : Getting into trials, frame or fork?

Hey all, sorry if the title is misleading but yeah..
I've wanted to get into trials since i first started riding, and have finally decided to do something about it, im teaching myself the basics, and was thinking i should change my bike, or get a new frame, so that it would be more suited to a trials environment (but still be alright for street)
so a few thoughts:
get some cheap non sus. corrected rigids, and ride my stp as a trials bike to see whether i actually like trials and not blow heaps of cash if i dont like it,
get a more trials oriented frame and fork (planet-x zebdi, woodman, or something) which would cost a fair bit more, but if i do keep riding trials, i would already have something nice for it, not a half assed trials geo :P
also, should i bother worrying that i will be using a rear disc for trials if i keep my stp (no v mounts:mad: , would love to chuck a hs-33 on!)
And lastly, what are strong rigids, not too concerned about weight, but want someting that will stand up to a beating as im not the smoothest rider:o
Anybody's opinion on what to do?
Cheers, Ben

if you want strong and dont mind weight, BA have like 5 sets of trailblade copys, probably give you some real cheap they came in by accident when i ordered my pair, theyre the ones naz has

Hmm i dont know anything about the trailblades (spec wise ie: weight, strength, sus. corrected or not? etc)
I was thinking of some planet x superlights (http://www.webcyclery.com/product.php?productid=16628&cat=326&page=1) as i know plenty of trials riders who use them, and they seem really well reviewed everywhere, but im wondering if they would stand a bit of abuse or be too weak, as they are designed to be strong, but light aswell...
any other rigids people would suggest?
cheers,
ben

Hey man,
I was in the same boat a while ago. I looked around and picked up a Raceline Rhino cheap enough on eBay. It is suited to trials much more than your average frame. I can't really comment on an STP as a trials frame, but it may be a good option for you.
The geometry of a Rhino is fairly good for an entry level trials bike. I can do a lot more on it over my hardtail with rigids. It is alot lighter and very easy to manouvre. Hope I helped!

bensuperlights aren't the strongest fork out there. if you're building it as a dedicated trials style riding bike they'd be great but if its more of an urban/trials bike they're not the best option.
having said that i have a friend who was running them on a norco one hun for a while with no problems but he didn't hit anything particularly large.
bern dont buy the trailblade imitations eh i bent mine in 2 weeks n i wasnt even riding hard, spend the cash get the dmr's. ull get a lowered front end 3 inches infact from a stock stp with drop off's, now what u want is a high rise 100m stem so ur seated a bit higher, id suggest a try all replica barn stem combo, n nice n wide atleast 28inch wide flat bar, the bars that flair at the end are old school. koxx my friend. manly cycles.
ben if ur beggining buy a mod (20inch) advantages are: cost (a decent setup ull be looking at 3g plus) i.e freewheel king are pretty much standard on the stocks they will set u back a ridiclous amount or the hadleys 600$. mod u run front freewheel cranks, n a White industries Eno Green trials sealed bearing freewheel, ur looking at sealing bearing, 6pawls, 3 offset and 72 engagement point same as a king and fraction of the price (140$), mod wheels are almost indestructable if built wheel, 26inch wheels obviously dont have the same strenght and begining this is a bonus, bashPLATE, im pretty sure there still around u can land on ur bashguard and it covers ur whole BB sprocket and a bit of ur frame goood for beggining, weight is sub 10kg easily, they look trick.

Yeha naz, i was thinking about getting a whole new mod, but i just dont have the kind of money, and even if i did, i wouldnt want to spend so much, and then decide that im over trials, and dont enjoy it, and have wasted heaps of money,
and finding a decent mod second hand (on the cheap), is nearly impossible.
i would love for a 20" rhino with hs-33's to come on farkin (or any site, ebay, observedtrials, canberratrials etc) for about 400/500 bucks but its jsut not happening..
hmm, so not the imitations naz, but the real things are ok? i think one of my mates has a spare pair....might look into it.. but i dunno
speaking of.. if you bent yours, what are you running now?

thats the scariest part. cause for concern. As amusing as it was, i'm starting to get a bit over the lotec bashing. he may not be the most competent mechanic but as long as he's only working on his own bike then i don't see what your problem is.

I might be selling mine. its in crap condition, but i'd sell it super cheap.

archi... i have you on msn, i'll talk to you sometime about it,
fartaholic dude.. i added you to msn, and will talk then.. how cheap is cheap, and what do you mean by crap condition, as in its thrashed (scratched and dinted and stuff, in bad condition, but works fine)
or parts arnt working (screwed hubs, serized cranks, cracked frame, forks bent/cracked or other serrious thigns) that would need immediate attention..
