hi everyone- just been making a few adjustments to my recently purchased bike and have been worried about removing the head because I heard something about having to loosen the stem first.
Can someone help me out?
Cheers

what is a head exaclty? in your words? first i thought you meant your headstem, then your headset..?
but if you take your star nut out, loosen your stem of and hit a 30ft+ drop flat biccies with out a helment or back support, you should have a pretty good chance of loseing your head, or at at least breaking one bone?

im guessing it's the head stem you want to take off, if it's thredless then you have to take the nut out the top then 2 on the side and it should slip straight off..
if it is threaded well eh.. i dunno

The object that goes from the top of your forks steerer tube, then extends forward. Which the bars sit on the end while another cap goes on the front, and holds them in place. that is the stem, generally black or silver..?
so in answer to your question, assumeing it has a 1 1/8 threadless steerer tube (the standard in most MTBS these days). you undo the bolt on top of your stem. which faces the sky. then loosen the bolts or bolt on the side of the stem directly below that? if that makes sense.. just keep in mind which bolt came from where.
dont worry i am sure you pick up the bike jargin in no time.
EDIT: Bobby digital bet me to it, i re-wrote that ^^ 3 times. :o

Cheers guys-that makes sense!
Arh, a stem, I thought you wanted to be decapitated. :p
The stem's an easy job, but when your messing around with the headset, you'll have to be careful of how much you tighten the the bolt so that you don't strip the starnut that's inside your steertube. :o

from the sound of your question your head doesnt seem to be screwed on very tightly so maybe if you run around in circles it will fall off on its own.
