seem its tax time im looking at getting a new rear shock for my stinky. i put 888r's up front and now looking at the back while i have the cash. so far iv only looked at a fox dhx5 so far because i know its not gonna be a problem fitting it, shock length and stroke length etc. mates have sugested others like swinger 4 or 6 way and maybe last years fox Vanilla RC which was on the 04 stinky primo that had 7' rear travel to. the only problem is would they fit. the dhx3 i have now is 8.5inch eye to eye with a 2.5inch stroke. has anyone elce upgraded there 05 stinkys rear end?
any suggestions are helpful.
thanks
also, say i buy a secondhand dhx5 with a different stroke length can you get them changed to be longer or shorter. has anyone had this done before, where and $$$?
With your shock,
try to buy the right size,
you can't easily get it changed because of the body length is different.
As for buying a Second hand DHX 5.. good bloody luck.. I'm yet to see 1 ever for sale second hand.
a 5th element will bolt straight into the Fox fittings, as for Manitou I couldn't say 100% I'm 90% sure they will work.
If your gonna buy second hand I'd suggest 5th element over any of them, as the rebuild service here in Australia is very good ect.. (and they don't treat you like crap cause you bought the shock overseas or watnot).
I believe DW will have DHX 5 in stock in a few weeks.. the DHX is still my choice if i was buying a new shock. but I run 5th elements with no issues.

they won't. the bush/reducer dimensions are different (12mm for manitou, as opposed to 1/2" for fox and 5th). thus you'll be looking at an extra hundred odd dollars for a new set of decent reducers if you buy a 2nd-hand manitou shock.

yeh thats what I thought too.. I was told by another birdy that manitou/5th are the same fittings, I thought that was wrong.
thanks for clearing that up.

When you say, the DHX3 I have now, do you mean on the bike?
If so, keep it!

agreed!
if you somehow come across a dirt cheap dhx5, it *might* be worth the upgrade. (but, as juls pointed out, 2nd-hand dhx5s aren't too common atm.) otherwise, i'd just stick with your 3 if i was you; the 5 only adds a bit of adjustability over your current shock, and you'd be most stupid to trade your dhx3 for a vanilla rc (that is unless you trade it for my vanilla rc, which is even 8.75 x 2.75 ;) ).
I have to admit the few DHX 3.0s I rode i was bitterly disapointed with them especially on the stinkys.. however I think that the springs might have been way too hard for me.. But I am 75-78kgs..

that's interesting. in spite of the reduced adjustability, i figured the 3.0's performance would at least be decent.

a 3.0, when set up well with a decent platform etc for your specific setting feels soo rad. sooo.. go to your bike shop, read your manual and get them to help you set it up for your weight. seriously, for the amount of money it would take to (unneccesarily) upgrade the shock could buy you a nice wheel or something along those lines. (or a pair even!) it sounds more like you are upgrading for the sake of it, it WILL NOT IMPROVE the feel to an extent that anyone but the most finely tuned people will notice. (squid) (also, try getting the right spring for your weight)(get a cheap one as they are all pretty much the same)
NoHuckSplat^ does speak some sense.
maybe try a softer spring before a new shock.. cause the wrong spring on a new shock is not gonna feel any better.

Actually bradh came across a great idea, if you don't like it, I've got an RC in 8.5 x 2.5 I'd happily swap :P In great condition!

Let me get this strait, we have two sizes of major brand shock mounts out there, surely someone must make converters?

rofl... that's such a bad idea that it hurts to think about it...
not to mention the fact that it's an unnecessary solution, since it concerns a problem that doesn't exist.
