I have just had my 04 4way serviced and was told i had bent bent the damper shaft and i have absoulutley no idea how this would happen. I was wondering if this was a regular thing for this shock?

could be a slightly twisted frame or if you had loose bushings that could have helped the cause.. bvut its not regular to answer your Q

What sort of frame was it in? Loose mounting hardware, loose pivots/bushings in your rear end or a tweaked frame would be the three most likely causes.

i am not sure about these shocks but if it had a spring and you had the pre load wound out too far this could cause it to bend (i think)

The only reason I could think or for bending a shock would be doing drops or anything that bottoms your shock significantly. What I mean is something that doesn't make you shock only just bottom out, but rather makes it bottom out with enough force to distort the damper shaft.
P.S. I'm assuming the damper shaft is the rod you see beneath your spring.

Also I've never heard of this happening, so I cannot say it's regular.

You're not likley to bend your shaft when its at bottom out. Usually the case for a bent shock shaft is the result of it reciving a side loading at the same time that its trying to compress, this causes the shaft to bind in the body and the compressive force with the side load makes it go to shit.

A mate of mine had this happen - basically in his case it was due to the top mounting bolt (where the shaft end is attached) coming loose/undone, and the shock compressed at a slightly funny angle, bending the shaft in the process.

Mine didn't bend, rather i snapped it off the shock body.
