Hey guys im having an arguement with my friend and i want to know what you guys thinkg

He wants an stp1 and hes saying that if he gets marzocchi 66rc 170mm forks that it will damage his frame because it will cause the front of the frame to be higher in geometry and cause the frame to crack, is there a limit on the travel of forks you can put on a hardtail
please explain :D i told him it wouldnt cause any damage, i see crazy dudes on hardtails with triple crown forks they dont care lol

Well some of the "crazy doooodes" on Ht's are rideing Morphines, 24 bikes frames, and other Hi end frames that are capable of taking a DC fork, buit yes there are alot of goons getting around with DC's on your regular Ht frames some last ie: gus's 250 frame took a hell of a beating and eventually cracked but it held. (gus hits rather large drops on HT's if you dont know)

On a STP there is no way id be putting a 66rc on it, not so much cuase of the travel but becuase the forks crown to axle length.. its like the same length as an 888 which is going to throw out the angles on the bike something stupid!

Best bet is to run at a 5" for on a STP in my opinion.

Rhys.

I saw someone rip a mad burnout at the drag races the other day, he was a crazy dude and didn't care, so because of that I think I can rip mad burnouts in my brothers 4cyl hatchback without damaging anything

yes it lasted quite well with boxxers, monsters and 888's... but that frame had a bloody hefty headtube area. i wouldnt reccomend using forks over 5" on an stp frame. even 5" would probably make the geo a little weird. they come with around 110mm stock dont they? i think thats a pretty sweet travel setting for HT's but it all depends on what you are actually using the bike for.

Well I can say the difference in handling on the pornking (from the carpark runs I have done in my driveway) between the fork that came with it (set around 4-5 inches) vs the DJ II at 6 inches is incredible...it feels shit in comparison with more travel.

The STP is similar (no not the same, but similar) geometry and designed use, and with that much travel, combined with such a tall fork, I think you would throw the handling way out and have something that rides like a chopper.

What about the Fox 36? Similar sorts of money, adjustable travel, and a pretty good fork (and far lighter).
