View Full Version : PM Reply = Computer freeze

RCOH

Everytime I reply to a PM my computer freezes & I have to "end Task' then open a new window then send a New PM.

scblack has reported the same problem (we were attempting to PM each other), & today for some reason I have a lot of PMs & have had to close & reopen farkin about 15 times!! (Yes, I'm slow).

Is this a problem at my end or yours? Anyone else sharing similar experiences?

Cheers
Rod

As RCOH says, this happened to me a few times as well.

I'm getting weirdness when hitting the confirm read request button, and some slowness/lack of response on loading the PM reply window - reloading the page usually works though.

If it matters, this is using Firefox on OS X. (Mac weenie!)

Actually, me too. I have sidebar operational, and when I hit the submit button for a message at the moment, it freezes at that point in time, and sidebar shows the CPU is then running at 100%. This finally clears itself up (if you wait a little bit of time) and then the receipt required button appears.

Weird, only just started happening....

To make life a little easier, those who are having issues should make note of their browser and version, and operating system and version.

In IE/Firefox go to Help>About and it will tell you the version. For Windows, go to Start>Run and type winver

I haven't had any dramas myself either (using firefox on winxp),

but Juls on here was having a whinge to me that his comp was freezing as soon as he sent a PM too.

So it sounds like there is some sort of issue.

i've had one or two freezes when PMing, but recently about 10+ when trying to post normally - it's giving me the shits!

i've downloaded some pathches and stuff today, so i'll see whether that makes a diff.

Win XP home with IE 6

It's only just started to happen.

I've only had it on 1 pm so far.. even though I send heaps of PM's regular.

So far only 1 specific PM reply.. if i try to reply to it at any time, it just freezes up.

but i can still direct PM the person no worries, and reply to there other pm's.

I'm just using XP+IE6 .. same as most other people.

For those who are experiencing problems perhaps you could try disabling Javascript.

Edit: So apparently this doesn't help. Might still be worth a try if your feeling desperate.

To disable Javascript (and other client side scripting) in Internet Explorer you need to select Internet Options from the Tools menu and then go to the Security tab. From there you select the zone that you want to disable Javascript for (eg. Internet) and then select Custom Level. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and you will find a section called Scripting and the first option there is labelled Active Scripting. Set this value to disable to disable all client side scripting languages including Javascript and then select OK to apply the change (keep selecting OK until all of the dialog windows disappear). To re-enable Javascript return here to select enable.

I am using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 with XP Pro and have had no problems what-so-ever.

Can I suggest anyone still using Internet Explorer try Firefox as it is vastly superior in every way to IE. It's faster, more secure, has heaps of extensions and themes and is free. IE sucks arse.

Mozilla Thunderbird is also a superior email client than Outlook Express. See what you think.

^^^^^^

listen to this man!!!

i downloaded it, and it is really good to use.

obviously i've only had a quick play with it, but it seems to be faster and easier than IE by quite a way, so download it and check it out!

thanks Angus.

Dammit. Mine is starting to do it too, and disabling Javascript hasn't fixed it.

Yeh I still have the same issue occasionally.

and your right disabling javascript has no effect.

Myn is a bit slow today to,

it seems to be related to the Read Reply thing.

maybe we should have a option to turn that off if it causes issues?
or maybe there is that option already?

just my observation
if i try to reply directly to a pm my computer always freezes up
but if i do an advanced search on the authors name
and click send a private message to authors name
it works fine everytime

hope this helps somewhat

cheers

strange stuff. It seems this has started happening since the upgrade to vb 3.0.8, I suggest clearing your temp net files and cookies. Hopefully it just goes away.

I've had the problem, it gave me the shits when I wrote a mini-essay in a PM. I left it frozen for a few minutes, and luckily it thawed out and the PM eventually got sent the first time. It has happened a few times since then, and every time I've just left it sit and eventually it started working again.

update: for me it is only too different users that it freezes. i have sent a couple without a trouble but others keep freezing. sadly unlike you rik, time didnt fix my problem.

Yeah, I've also had plenty of problems with replying to messages lately, but was not as patient as Rik.
I'm running IE 6.0 with SP2 on windows XP.

I'll try the deleting temp files etc and see if that makes a difference.

I have been patient as Rik said at work, and it does unfreeze. However, at home last night it wouldn't unfreeze, even after a long period of time. Very, very frustrating (straight XP set up with Windows Internet Explorer)...

I'm finding the same - SLOWLY it will get there if I make a post.

But I don't think clearing things (temp files ot whatever) is the answer - I now have a two day old machine here at work (with sound! yay!), with XP and Windows Explorer, and ITS got the same problems.

So far I've found this problem only occurs when you have a quote in the message. It also seems to have been happening after I upgraded the forum to 3.0.8.

So in short, for now... stay away from quotes.... if you need to use them be patient. If you have a fast computer it will eventually send the message, it just seems to hang for a bit.

Hopefully the problem will be sorted with a vBulletin update or something shortly!
