ok i'm curious,
i had never noticed them but apparently there are signs at the new civic skatepark(canberra) stating no bikes on the grounds that the park is too small. my question is what effect do these signs actually have. are they similar to the signs stating no responsibility for injury is taken at theme parks etc, meaning they don't count for shit?

I saw no signs.
that said, the park will suck for everybody when its crowded.
who told you?
and I have it on good terms that bikes are allowed into all canberra skateparks.

New civic skatepark???
Are we talking about the shitty half pipe on the edge of glebe park or is there something fresh??
.....and isn't a sign banning bikes just gonna make it more popular for punk ass mtbikers??

yes, there is something fresh.
apparently there have already been two major accidents caused by bikes, including one resulting in a broken leg, and many skaters there are more against us than usual. be wary, we don't want bikes banned if they're not already.
Ride safe, wait for a run, and don't monopolise the park.
Be a nice bloke, even if they turn against you. the park is too fun to lose like that.

I can't see skaters doing that much there, its quite biking like.
Unless they are uber good, they probably all pose around like punters.
Although I can't see someone on a MTB hitting the vert section, I would want to hit that, looks ace.

well, the vert walll has already been hit by MTB'ers.
It is NOT a bike oriented park. it sfun, but it is definitely a more skateboarder park.
and there are a hell of a lot of good skaters.
keep your wits about you guys.

It looks like a nice park. where is it and how long has it been there for? i dident no bout it till now.
funny you mention that.
bondi skatepark after it opened had a sign(on all 5 signs lol) stating "no mountain bikes" me not knowing this, a skater came up to me and said that the sign said so, me being a uselles smartass turned around n said fuck off, luckily the skater just blew it off, and after gettin quite wound up read the sign, oh noes there was a sign, felt quite the fu. but more recently the sign has been taken down...
fuck litigation. i want my coffee hot, i dont want to pay fines, i hate the state debt recovery office, and fuck you sherriff how can we stoop so low as to call officers with the most power direct from the US. i mean fuck next well be calling aluminium, alummmmninumm

no, no, the skaters enforce or will enforce it here.
on Friday, pretty much all the skaters at the park shouted at three bike riders for 10 or so minutes before the bikes chose to leave. They're pretty much led by spud, the owner of shifty's skateshop and his buddies, as well as some of the younger guys.
they have their reasons for not alllowing us in. I mean in one week of opening:
- 2 major collisions,
- 1 involving a broken leg on the skater end,
- A rider who shall remain nameless trying to pull out a rail so he could wallride (nice going fuckface),
-and many near misses because of people not looking where they are going when they do the spine.
I can see why we are banned/are gonna be banned soon.

Ok. Pulling out a rail is just plain stupid......what an idiot.
Skaters can be intollerant at the best of times, but generally they are just having a go because some choose to have the view that skate parks are only for skaters.
Basic rule. If the park is too small, stay the hell out. You'l only end up causing trouble. However that park does not look overly small.
Proll ybest to leave em to their new toy for awhile, then slowly creep back in, they'll forget about whatever they were against.

i would agree with the above.
the skaters will be quite territorial for a while with 'their' new bit of land, but after a few weeks they will no longer come evry day as it won't be new anymore, so then we will have plenty of time and space to play.
the park is actually a lot smaller than you think.
how many bikers actually use it though? i was about to say before banning maybe they should have "bike happy hour" or something, but it would probably be worse to kick 50 skaters out for 2 hours so they can stand and taunt 5 bikers.
EDIT:
oh yeah, and whoever tried to damage the park is a total moron.
[wombat edit: If you're going to do a rant, do me a few favours:
- Pick up a thesaurus; there's plenty of words other than "fuck" that can get your point across.
- Make sure that your diatribe is coherent and readable.
- Most importantly though, get a clue. Badmouthing skaters and being a tool about park rights is exactly the sort of thing that gets bikes kicked out.] .

Never trust a thin peice of 9 ply maple and your life as you know it. only trust air hardened renyolds tubing.
I know of a local S.P that the skaters have sprayed NO BIKES every where and will stand up to a bout a maximum of 4 riders. if you want to ride there turn up 15-20 strong and they will dissapear into the shadows pretty qiuck.
its time for some hard ass whoppin!

You know, I don't like skating much but I have some sympathy for the skaters here.
1. Skateboards are slow and not very manoeverable, especially compared to bikes. Sharing a park mustn't be a lot of fun when you are riding an unstable little board and having to watch out for people travelling heaps faster than you (and have less to fear from a collision). Big potential for injury there, as Roasted's post shows.
2. There aren't that many good places for skaters to ride. Boards are pretty useless for travelling any distance to new areas, intolerant of bad surfacing, and most places with fun landscaping are guarded by humourless security goons (this applies for biks as well). Skate parks on the other hand are tailor-made for them, so no wonder they want priority.
I guess that if you really want to ride skateparks, try and do it in unpopular hours. This also means you will have more space to do bigger, cooler tricks. I know I've been the only guy riding the park in Redfern before :D so I know of what I speak.

Binaural's post shows EXACTLY why most skaters dont like us.
