Well the new national football comp kicks off this week and I was just curious to see who else will be supporting it?

I'm off to see Newcastle play Adelaide on friday night and have been waiting for what seems for ever for this to start. Hopefully I will have my new jersey before then.

i think it wont take off aswell they would have hoped seeing as soccer is not our biggest sport here. but saying that they have got good players (internationals) which should help bring people.

it should be interesting to see how it goes.

The A league in my opinion wont last for long. We are getting near retired ex-stars to come which isnt wat we need, it may be good for the exposure of the sport, but what we need is solid youth players to come up. Certain members of the soccer board are only in it fot the $$$ which is the wrong idea

From what I have seen so far, the standard of the game is a lot higher than it was in the NSL.

While I agree there are a few older players who have come back, I don't think this is a bad thing, a lot of these guys have a lot of experience that will hopefully rub off onto the younger squad members (and there are a lot of quality young players in the league) who will later on play for australia.

I don't know that I agree that the people running the game now are only in it for the $$$. That certainly was the case with the old soccer australia, but those guys are long gone.

I'm not sure if the FFA is being overly optimistic with the anticipated crowd figures, but I still think they will be good, especially games like Newcastle V Central Coast.

Until the leauge is up to scratch, retired ex-stars will do the job. I think that if it encourages a strong youth league, then the sky is the limit for soccer in Aus.

I think it will take some time, but eventually will build to a respectable level.

I do hope it will anyway. I am no soccer fan, but it seems like a step in the right direction.

Well its got alot more advertising then the NSL, i'm looking forward to support the QLD team. I met some of them at my schools soccer dinner, they were playing i think Sydney or someone... 0-0. Were quite pleased.

The tv ad's preety good, creative. At least with more exposure the word will get out soccers back again.

I'm no soccer fan but I hope it works. Sport is one thing that has the ability to bring all parts of the community and the world together to have fun. There was a time when Australia's main element of diplomacy with India was through cricket. You also see friendlies in other sports between nations that have bad relations. It can also be used the other way like the sanctions on South Africa due to Apartheid or the USSR/USA boycotts of the Olympics. All in all though, there are far more positives in sport than negatives so the more sport the better.

I also want to see the :D Aussies :) start kicking some arse at the world cup!

That will be the day when we have a good youth team without kewell or viduka and big names like that, who think that it is ok not to playing in the world cup qualifying and if we by any chance make it to the world cup play for us then.

the tv advertising is mad but for it to really take off, the games need to be shown live or delayed to get a national audience instead of just a wrap of the highlights ont eh SBS's The World Game..............but from the sounds of it, it will the best thing since sliced bread.........but to really get it noticed by the average joe blow (who loves his AFL, Rugby, Cricket) maybe they should of invited european clubs to use the A-League as a breeding ground for young (15-18 year olds) to show their stuff. buy having the big european clubs invovled show the FIFA punks that we have something special and our best players can proform against the up and coming stars, and also the european clubs may get our stars in their lineup...........its great that the champion will play off in the asian club championship..........

Fox have picked up the TV rights and will be showing most of the games live. I wish it was free to air TV, but I guess it is better than nothing. Maybe I will have to finally get fox put on at my house.

I'm really looking forward to the Aisian Club Championship, hopefully newcastle make it. Personally I think that it will be Asian championship that will kick start the media interest, but we will have to wait and see on that.

Well first games last night. I was at the Newcastle game which had a reasonble crowd of 13,100. I think the knights last homegame today may have impacted on the crowd as well, so hopefully the next home game against sydney is bigger. Unfortunately we went down 1-0 to adelaide.

First thing I noticed was the quality of the game. It is so much better than anything the NSL ever had to offer. Really, if youve been half thinking of getting along, go, I don't think you will be dissapointed.

In the other game last night, Central Coast beat perth in front of 11,000 people.

Looks like over 20,000 turned up to see Brisbane beat Auckland 2-0.

Looks like I am going to have to finally give in and get myself fox.

I'd be surprised if sydney don't beat melbourne, but then again Newcastle and Perth were both expected to win.

The goal scored against Perth was an absolute cracker.

who knows what the second week will bring

Hopefully a win to Newcastle :D

This weekends games have gotten me even more excited about the A-League and the best thing is, no team really looks like it will run away with it.
