I was looking on the net for a new full face and came accross the 06 Specialized Deviant Helmet. I can't find much info on them. If there are any Specialized dealers on here I'd be keen to find out when or if they'll be available in Aus.

This is the write up from MTB action mag I just found.
Downhillers and freeriders will appreciate the new Carbon fiber full-face helmet. Specialized calls it the Deviant. It is mega light weight and heavily ventilated. No problems with your helmet obscuring your view mid-stunt either, because it incorporates the adjustable Pro-Fit retention device. The new lid costs $350 in carbon and $130 in fiberglass.
I'm assuming MTB action is a US mag so these would be the prices there. I'm still interested in hearing from anyone here that knows anything about it.

Expect to see Deviant fullface out here October/November. Seems like the full carbon one will be similar to Troy lee composite D2 pricing, at an educated guess. But the composite one should be screamin' value for money.

The "Skillet" skate helmet (but with the same serious retention system as their high end XC/road lids) is already on the shelf. Should be pics on the big S's website.

Well yeah. Of course no uglier than the potty lid DJ stuff everyone else wears, although a LOT safer. But yeah, they need a spike on top, look like a Nazi war lid...
I just don't like the silver mouthpiece. If they went for something a little more low key there, like TLD, I would definitely get me one of the composite flames ones.

Both are ugly, in a choice of lesser evils I'd go the skillet because of the retention system. But aesthetically yeah, the Protecs would be marginally ahead.
I'd rather be visually ugly because of a helmet, than ugly and drooling in a wheelchair because of a helmet failing...Not that I'm implying the TSG/protec etc are weak, nay I'm implying they are a tad more agricultural in design.

Does anyone know what the "adjustable Pro-Fit retention device" is.

I'm not convinced. The protecs hug your head (the classics especially). Have you tried one floody? Even without the stap done up they stay put. The specialized is just like every other pryme/tsg/kmart brand bucket. The only thing keeping them on is the stap. The addition of the rearward xc helmet syle strap mearly keeps the bowl from floating. The protecs simpley don't do this in the first place.
As for which will put you in a wheelchair? Well thats just too hard of a judgment for either me or you to make. But if a helmet is comfortable and looks good, then it is definatly more likely to be worn- which is definatly a step in the right dirrection. Otherwise, bring back the stackhat!

You're probably right, the skillet feels more secure than the Protec et al (yeah I have tried them), but wheelchair inducing, ok exaggeration on my part as emphasis about the technical benefits of a marginally more modern design.
I don't mind either, but I agree I do think the protec etc look a tad nicer. The vents in the front of the skillet are its ugliest feature, otherwise its reminiscent of a Giro "Bad Lieutenant", as seen on Palmer at sea otter this year. And the full face is let down by that chrome grille (belongs on a microphone, toaster, perhaps Buick) , perhaps it will be removable, as otherwise its an awesome value helmet.

You probably already know, but Pro-tec's B2 (which offers shitloads more protection than their classic skate) was put in for Australian standards testing only a little while ago.
They failed.
(This isn't meant to be proof of anything, just an interesting point worth noting, it suprised me a little as they're my preferred skate lid, due mainly to fit)

The only reason ANY helmet fails testing is because the importer didn't pay enough money to get them 'tested'.
Same used to go for specialized helmets, until they coughed up the cash. Giro helmets stalled here for the same reason a while back also.
Just go have a look at big W and tell me why they pass and the protec fails. It all comes down to a big dirty bribe system. At one stage big W was selling a full foam (no plastic coating) skate style lid with minimal straping for $12.50.
Aussie standards are a JOKE.
If I'm talking shit, prove me otherwise. :P
