I vaguely remember reading sometime ago on another board about a method to convert a bog standard shimano QR rear hub to take a BMX style bolt on axle. Has anyone done this? Whats required apart from a replacement axle?

Are Shimano QR axles 10mm?
Um, they're unsealed, so just go and buy a quality hub with new bearings and hardware. Quality = something like Standard or Kink.
ive never heard of that but aerial make a convertable hub and its blue or gold...very wanky

huh? Evey Shimano MTB hub I've ever owned has been sealed. They use cup and cone bearings rather than cartridge style bearings but if you can believe Shimano they're better suited to the type of loading hubs get anyway.

for a bmx......
get an aerial if your gonna be splashing out

Yes it is possible, the kind people at banshee provide you with a solid chromo axel to convert your qr shimano hubs to bolt through. I dont think its the same diameter axel as a bmx axel however.

Thats exactly what I want. So short of buying a Banshee, how can I get one?

Ive no idea.....buy a banshee?? haha, nah im sure theres a supply of them comming from somewhere, so it might take a bit of chasing.
Step 1) Go to a bike shop
Step 2) Say "I'd like a solid, blot on axle for my Shimano hub please.
Bike shop employee should reply "Here is the bolt on axle for your Shimano hub"
Step 3) Take axle from employee or alternately, have employee install axle for you.
Step 4) Pay said employee appropriately for goods received and services rendered.

i've done this to a couple of my hubs, and i''m about to swap over my XT next week. it's rally easy if you have cone spanners and a cpl of brain cells.
just make sure you get the right length, and you'll be fine.
peachy

shit.... i've only got spanners.

you may want to check the quality of the steel the solid axels are made from as most are for low end bikes and are not much stronger than a shimano qr axel.
the other option is strip the hub and pop down to the local machine shop and get them to make a solid axel for you. you can then spec a strong grade of steel. dont forget to add extra length on for the nuts and drop outs.
or finally you might be lucky in the local ironmungers (sp) and find some studding (threaded bar) of a high (8.8) grade.

Not that sort of bolt on Fuzz, he means just a standard nutted axle.
It's pretty simple, just like Ryan said, go buy a 3/8th 7spd axle (should be plenty long enough, just ditch the spacer and chuck it in. Get a cromo one if you can, we don't even stock the hi-ten ones anymore, the cromo is so much stronger and it's still on 10 bucks.
As for the sealed bearing debate, sxereturn, are you trying to say that XTR hubs aren't quality because they don't run sealed bearings (other confusion: Shimano hubs are "unsealed" as sealed generally mean cartridge bearings). The seals (confusing I know) that they do have though, are very good and the beauty of them is that you can adjust your bearings instead of just chucking them.
