Any of you southern brothers got any info (and or pics) of the new DH track they're using for the first Nat round in Tassie?
Also how far from Hobart?

With a thread title like that, be prepared for some dodgey responses.
the track is 10mins drive from the centre of hobart. So any accomodation you can get that mentions anything about being nearish to hobart is going to be close to the track.
The DH track isnt built yet.....but is well on its way. the four cross track has been done for ages and is the best in AUS.

Isn't built yet??? How the fuck does MTBA allow clubs to host a National DH round without having a track built. The location must have heaps of potential.
My tickets are already booked, I hope the DH track rivals the 4x track, if its as good as what you say.
No need to worry, the mountain has massive potential and has been closely inspected prior to development.
The whole park layout has been designed from scratch by MTB track designers, MV Australia, so it will be a very professional site when completed. The local guys doing the actual hands on building are super focused, fast downhillers and great builders.
The top section of the DH course is being constructed at the moment, the bottom sections have been done for months.
An inspection of all trails and designs were done by MTBA at the opening of the park a few months back.

Mmm...so we've heard how great the tracks are, and we believe you. How about that map then...Don't want to land at the airport and have no idea of how to get there.

Yep, inside 10 minutes from town unless traffic is unbelievably ridiculous (like a jumbo jet crashing and blocking 4 lanes level ridiculousness).
As for getting to Hobart, from the boat you just follow the signs along the highway, from the airport you just go out of the airport and turn left at the roundabout, then follow the highway in , across the bridge and into the CBD.
REALLY easy place to Navigate.
PM me (or probably any other Tassie members) if you want any more help, I'm happy to give you any pointers on stuff.
Plenty of bikeshops in the CBD and a few within a couple of kms which can help out with nearly anything. Heck, I worked in one until yesterday, lol...
cheers,

its at the very end of tolosa st, on the top map you will see it to the mid-west. its very hard to miss really, just follow the signs to 'Glenorchy' (watch out the in-breds and bogans) then the signs to 'tolosa park'
cheers

devonport is 3 hours from hobart, nannas take about 4 hours but you'd have to be crawling!
no need to stress about the downhill myself and my brother are DH course managers so I can tell you now I have walked every inch of the trail area many many times so the track is being meticulously designed to make the most of the hill. I've raced vail, mont saint anne, vermont, and basically every nationals track ever run, on top of building around half a dozen dh race tracks (most built either by myself or with my brothers help) down here , so have a pretty good idea what makes an awesome dh race track.
unbeknowns to most people we have already built the entire top section, a heap of middle sections, and cleared pretty much everything else. The track will be basically fully rideable in the next week or so.
a breif run down of everything so far....the start straight hits a couple of small rock gardens then through a few loose open super wide switch back where the tighter you exit the better you enter the next, no berms. Then into a flat out straight with a few kinks, then a tight loose corner with a wide entry into a pretty nasty little rock garden with a tricky exit, then the track winds through some medium tight switches before you hit switch back central. a bunch of about 8 random switchbacks linked by varying lengths of track have been bermed into the hill. This section took bloody ages to plan and flows beautifully whilst still being hellishly hard to pin it through, a few of the corners are littlerd with boulders and most have heaps of possible lines. your then shot into a 6+ drop (will be much much bigger by the time you land) the track the opens out a bit with a straight then some open flat out drifty corners for a while. We then gradually tighten the track up again into some loose switchbacks (most likely off camber and rutted out). following these the track opens up again and a fast straight littered with bomb holes and little kickers shoots you out alongside the access road for a bit of spectator action on the way up. Then things get rocky again with a few drop offs and loose wide rockgardens with lots of line choice. This about half way point and the rest will be a pretty similar afair.
Basically we're aiming for a track which flows nicely and offers lots of different speeds, lots of loose corners, nice berms, drops and rocks, something for everyone but basically a track which will reward those who corner hard but smoothly. the bottom section which has been there for ages includes a heap of excavator made berms and jumps and is a heap of fun.
thats it for now, it will be a great track!!

around four minutes give or take, we'll know in a week or son.
get booking people, the ferry is cheap or flying will cost you next to nothing. Remember our bike park also has a big dirt jumps area to play in, plus tassie has a bunch of other great riding venues for DH and XC,
book now!!

we finished clearing the DH track today, a few sections need a bit of finishing off but we're about done. We made some changes to the original line and have found a few very nice new sections. We've added a step down into a huge long berm which then shoots you up another kicker straight away, hard to explain but will be awesome to ride. Also now in the track is a reasonably sized road gap, a sketchy bomb hole, and plenty of nasty steep rocky switchbacks. The track will be finished this week. I'll post up some shots of a few of the nicer sections soon. Should also add that the 200m of flat mentioned on the web site has now been eliminated, now theres no boring link sections its all good all the way

Sounds great frenchy.
I have seen frenchy's work by the way and he does build bloody good tracks.
The Tranmere tracks he built are awesome so anyone coming down thats got some spare time after the races should go ride them as well.
By the way,
anyone coming down who may want to throw down a tent for free pm me.
I live about 25-30mins from the bike park on 10 acres (sloping block - with a few flatter areas, mainly cleared - some bush).
Also anyone who's got time and would like to go ride some other popular tracks after the racing, either Monday or Tuesday (or both) let me know as well.
Cheers.

crikey floody you must drive slow.
You can do it easily in 3 without speeding.
For those of you coming over on the ferries. You can take a scenic route to Hobart via the Great Lake if you want to have a look a some great countryside. It sure beats the boring drive down the main highway (Midlands) and takes no longer to travel.
If anyone interested wants directions then I'll post em up
Have a look at the new www.tasbikepark.com site for heaps of info on the event.

And if you do speed...haha. Have punched out of the Hobart outskirts a just before 4 am and comfortably been sitting eating breakfast in Devonport by 6:30...
However, illegal and immature activities aside, I Really just wanted to give a conservative estimate to make sure nobody has to time things to tight and get stuck on the island should any mishap occur..
3hrs should do it as others have said.

What's the shuttle back up like? 2wd or 4wd?
Do you know if the track will be open on the Friday of the Nat round?
frenchie
13-09-2005, 07:07 PM
the track will be open friday but no vehicle access will be had until saturday.
In fact all courses will be available friday, the four cross is so good its worth coming down early to hit that alone.
the access road is 4wd only. army vehicles will be shuttling, def. not 2wd access believe me we've had a crack at it while carting tools to the top
