Just a sudden urge to clarify what a competent dj'er is..
When are you considered as a competent dirt jumper?
What do you have to do to be considered a competent dj'er?
How long do you have to be a dj'er before you're considered competent?
do you have to know certain tricks? if so which?
any light shed on this is appreciated

Well i recently read Matt Hoffman Testimonry - The ride of my life
although he is a bmx'er i think the main quote can also apply for DJ'in
"I had seriously reached a point in my life where i wasnt scared of anything. Panic was replaced by 'aww, shit, how can i fix this before i hit the ground?'"

A competent Dirtjumper:
Is someone who is able to ride all different types or dirtjumps such as; vert and short, long and fast, short and even slope, hips and so on).
Someone who is able to ride smoothly with style, not hook up on landings too often, knows how to dirtjump and DOES NOT huck!
A competent dirtjumper (from my perspective) has nothing to do with what tricks he/she can do.

a competent djer in my opinion is someone who can rock up to any set of trails and jump them whith confidence and style. i reckon i has nothing to do with what trick he/she can do(any idiot can take there feet of in the air or throw the tail out) but rather the style and finesse that the rider adds to the trick.

i agree with every one else, some one that can hit any thing and make it look easy and land smoothly and do all types of jumps. Its true any one can wip the bike but if u do it with style and make it look unique than its cool.

you are a competent dirt jumper when you cease seeking approval of others and are having a fun time whenever dirt jumping.

well really... when someone hucks it should be for a reason, say if you are coming up short of the landing. strait and zink really dont have much style, i mean they can dirtjump but they dont have much style. when you see someone do a smooth as panny and plants it back down on the landing with precision, then that is dirtjumping. when someone pulls off a backflip or 360 and lands it like shit you can still apreciate it. but if i were to compare the two, i would much rather watch a smooth rider pull nice stylish pannies rather than backflips and 360s.
tricks are all good and fun but you would be better off learning how to jump with style, and learn to jump as many different jumps as possible. then once you have gotten all that down... start practicing tricks.

Straight hucks for competition, is is for a reason, its pretty hard to go in crankworx or somethin and jnot be accused of hucking...
So now, we are going into personal opinions, a person who can backflip and 360, to me, IS a competent dirt jumper, because of the mere fact that they are in the probably 1% of dj'ers who can anctually stick the trick. And to say basigotia and strait arent smooth is a load as well. Strait could pull as many flattys as he wanted, but thats not his style, he could flatty better than 99.99% of riders.
stylish...most certainly not. (pics below)
oh, and the first pic is a pic of me.....i believe that is a stylish flatty, does that make ME a more competent dirt jumper than basigotia, zink, strait... hell NO!

i didnt say anything about basigouta (however you spell it) not being smooth. i reckon he has a rad style. and i do believe if you can do backflips, 360 etc. you are a competent dirtjumper. but it is better off to learn how to jump properly, preferably with style before you start pulling dumb tricks.
strait has style but he is the same as most people. zink just pull big tricks... :| boring.
what ever happened to dirtjumping when it was just about style and finesse. big pannies and whips etc. in my opinion, that is where its at, and if people can do 360s, backflips and land em smooth and stylishly then that is sweet as too.

The point is that big whips and pannies arent hard, they might have style, but any average punter can do them, the pros can pull them too but style doesnt win comps, every pro around is waay past "style" they mastered that long ago. you are simply standing in the way of progression, whips and flatty's do get boring after a while (for the rider)
