Ive come to a conclusion that the only way you will go anywere in DH is if you know how to drift over 40km/h on gravel or dirt and do mad cutties? and have big balls. Becuase riders like fabian berrel dont look like the type of rider that should have won at worlds. But he does know how to drift and do cutties.

i reckon u should try and not drift while going fast on gravel. then ur going to be sucessful. coz any1 can drift and do cutties but i doubt many can stick flat sketchy corners at high speeds.

LOL....lil' whippersnappers....

I have just been building some different types of corners around my house, i have a Berm, a flat sketchy loose corner and an off camber corner, i am trying to hit them faster and faster all the time and get my technique right.

Cuttying and drifting dont improve your performance, you just do that to show off or to spray dirt and rocks on someones bike next to you:p (If those are not the purposes you've got me beat.?)

I disagree.
Practicing cutties gives you a good 'feel' for your bike. Helps you get comfortable with the rear sliding.

yes i agree, drifting/cutties makes you feel a little more safe on your bike at high speeds. justin haviekanien(spelling) shows you how in fundementals

Suppose you have to watch Fundamentals - its a flat corner take at speed, leaning on the front wheel and digging, allowing the rear to slide round straight for where you're going.

How come Fabien Barel doesn't look like the kind of rider that should have won the worlds? (now that he's done it twice in a row).

The reason that its such a good thing to practice cutys/drifting for down hill is so you can get the feel for loosing traction on both wheels then that meens you can hit flat corners or berms with a shit load of speed and no that you can drift/cuty noing you can trust your tyers the hole time.

Carve the front wheel , just on the edge of traction and wait for the back to trail around, then power out?

Kinda dig the front wheel around the corner, and flick the rear straight (at the same time). A real sort of flick. And ripping the front wheel - not carving - a very sharp turn.

They're leaning forward and flicking the rear from the hips sort of thing. Maybe I'm not describing too well, as I say Fundamentals video has good footage.

I recommend the dvd - its great riding skills in general.

I think school holidays is a bad idea for you mate, you need all the study you can get

Ahh yes, now I get you, turn in, square off, power out keeping speed up.

i just do cutties around the town whenever i see something thats useful. i started buy finding some grass next to concret and put some washing detergent on the grass and the rear slides good and one you get the hang of it on the hell slipery grass go find some metal dust or loose small rocks or dirt and have fun

It's good to practice them because it teaches riders to "shift" more weight over the front when cornering.

It's also easy to cheat with an old rear/high pressure tyre.

A lot of downhillers keep too much weight over the back throught the entire downhill run and then wonder why their front tyre feels loose and sketchy in the corners.

Watch how far Sam Hill's chin is hanging out forward when he corners.

Steve Peat also had some good advice in that Fund.DVD. He said get over/focus your weight/attention on the inside line edge of your front tyre. As long as the front is weighted well, the rear will slide in and out all day coming back into line.
