Bike has 9" travel, ad will RETAIL for $2000 for the frame. Thats stupid cheap. Headset is weird, 1.5 lower with a 1 1/8th upper. 150 rear spacing. Complete bike is $5000, with nice ringle bits and Fox 40 RC2.

the glory has boxxers on it. Best bet would be to grad a giant catalogue from a bike shop. But i didnt see any dh team in the catalogue, so it may be one of those late entry things. do you know that its stock?could have been modified?

not too sure which direction Giant are heading at the moment. The bike looks a little bit too weird. Who knows, it might work really well.....

Whats the go with that head tube? Too bad if you wanted a new headset...you have to buy a 1 1/8 reducer headset as well as a 1 1/8 headset...I think the 1.5 on the bottom is usless as you wouldn't be able to run anything with a 1.5 steerer...

Yeh that headset goes to the top of my 'dumbest mtb ideas ever' list.

the weirdest part is, that aint the rig randos been riding. and since he had been riding it for close to a year, thats weird for them to change it.

Bigger bearings on the major load bearing race = longer life etc?

My guess..

God that shock mount is one ugly duckling tho. Giant have a bit of a rep for putting linkages in harms way though...

theyre 2 different frames

the DH Team and the Glory (one shown above)

well the headset makes sense from a structural point of view, ie have the bigger bearings at the bottom of the headtube which is a higher stress area, however very impractical in terms of buying a headset, should have just gone 1.5
i hate it when big companies do shit like this that just screws over the consumer

If you're hucking your down tube onto rocks, id pray for any frame you owned.

Aside from having to buy two headsets instead of one (although I think a lot of companies are willing to sell top and bottom cups separately nowadays?), it's not actually as useless as it may seem. The bottom headset cup is more highly loaded than the top (and when headtubes come off, they usually go from the bottom rather than the top), so you now have a larger weld area for the downtube (which obviously means stronger) and can use a smaller diameter top tube (which means lighter, cheaper [no fancy tube work to bump it out to fit a 1.5 top section] or both - it's pretty rare, from what I've seen, for top tubes to fail in compression before anything else lets go). You also now have the option to run a zero-stack reducer headset to lower your bars/steepen the head angle.

That said, I don't really see any actual advantage; any potential cost savings in making the frame is surely going to be lost by having to go to the bother of getting and installing two different headset cups, and it's going to piss a lot of people off.

Personally i dont care what it LOOKS like, i am more interested in how it performs. And since NONE of you have actualy riden one, i dont think your comments have any merit except for COSMETIC opinions. I am a fan of Giant bikes becuase they are cheap and effective. You can go to the store and actually buy what the current sponsored riders have (excluding prototypes) and there fore have no exuse for not riding as fast as them except for your own ability, as you have the SAME equiptment. I have a Giant DH comp and yes i have smashed up the linkage a couple of times but i am a hack of a rider. I am sure a pro doesnt have as much trouble. But by the way this frame looks, if you smash that part of ANY bike you are in serious trouble anyway. My 2 cents.

any idea why giant is moving away from manitou? Last few years most giant bikes have been specced out with a manitou fork and or swinger shock. The new lineups are specced mostly with marzocchi/fox and occasionally rock shox. That bike looks hideous with 40's on the front of it.

40's make everything better looking - I might save up for some to carry 'round - I might get a root then...

Except the only offers would be from dudes on Farkin....

Yeah, unconventional looking, but I'm sure it works well, I'd ride one anyday - Giant are bringing freeride to the masses - good on 'em....

How is Giant different in that regard to pretty much every other brand out there?

Looks like a sweet machine and 40's make anything look good. I can't believe people don't like the blue! Interesting shock mount, though i cant imagine that it'd get hit much. rocks would have to get through the front wheel and the BB first. Unless they were those bastard little pebbles that kick up off your wheel in which case they'd hit the downtube anyways. and has anyone ever been on a wet ride and not got shit all over their shock? Unless of course they have a sock on it...

I had a decent ride of rando's prototype down at thredbo, almos tthe same, excep the shock mount was in the same place but machined differently, and the headtube was different.

and I can say this. it SHITS all over the other Giant DH bikes, which are radtastic as is. hooks up damn good, pedals well, but is still plush. that said, I havent had a super-long ride on one, but my initial impressions are good.

As far as i know, Giant were one of the first companys to do so, and since a good portion of the bicycle industrys frames are produced from a Giant factory, then it was obvious it was a good move.

So what, are they releasing both (like the Comp/Team thing) or just to stoopid-lookin' Glory?
