I don't know if it's just me, but do other people find that only stating "offers" under the price of an item to be really annoying. In most cases, the buyer knows what they are after, so why not just put a rough price. All "offers" does is strings out the length of time a sale takes to go through, grrrrrrr grrrrrrr.

Yeh man, ticks me off too! We don't know the condition of the item, so how are we supposed to make an offer. Also if we a make a fairly average or below offer the buyed gets all rancid at ya. I think it would be a better idea to give a general price of what the seller wants and the option of negotiabilty(is that a real word?).
Yeh...there's my 2 cents!

I'm definately no fan of making offers. But I don't like wiping my bum when I go to the toilet either, but I still do that.......most of the time.

I think it's something that you just have to come to terms with......same goes for posting in the appropriate forum. This should be in site suggestions ;)

Will move it for you. ;)

I like doing it because you can try and get the most out of your sale.
But lately, due to lack of interest, i've put up a guideline.

The reality going in to a sale is that most people have a bottom line in mind, but want to get the highest price possible. Therefore, revealing that bottom line too early may end up costing the seller some dough.

If society as a whole took umbrage at the concept of taking offers, then things like auctions would cease to be possible.

With the exception of silent auctions, I don't think that's the best of comparisons.

As a seller, stating simply that you're 'open to offers' is the safe option, but, as a buyer, that strategy on the part of the seller can be incredibly annoying, on account of the marked increase in the amount of to-ing and fro-ing that can go on, which is a direct result of not having a known starting point.

yeah for sure, at least put a haggle worthy price up there and let us no that its very negotiable, i make offers because the end result of an offer is get lost thats too low even though the person selling said give me offers ...... its ok on small items but complete bikes you wont have complete idea of its price because you havent put the parts on it, seen what its been through to be able to judge it, meaning the owner should put up what he or she is at least thinking, then we can work on the price weather it be higher or lower.

the disadvanntage, and i think sellers see it, is that people who do put 'offers' under price is that the item usually doesn't sell because people are too scared to throw a price at them.

just my 2 cents.

The haggle worthy price is the best solution imo.

I have a different problem on another mtb forum (www.ridefree.fi) in that some sellers aren't even willing to provide pics at all! They just say to look up the manufacturers website. Instantly that pisses me of because i already know what they are supposed to look like, i just want to see what kind of condition the particular item they are selling is in!!! I can understand them saying that if the part hasn't been used but if it has then i want to see its current state! Providing some pics is like a sign of good faith to me, i mean who wants to buy used stuff sight unseen??
Anyway, rant over, carry on! :)

You'd have to be a deadset idiot not to post pics.....an arrogant idiot that is!

For Auctions we have ebay anyway. I think not giving some semblance of an asking price is inviting angst from viewers, and also means a lot of people will simply not even offer, for the reason of not having an adequate idea of what the asking price could be...

Of course, you can advertise something for $1500 and still have 50 PMs from 12 yr olds wanting it for $500, and then only after they sell their bike...haha so asking prices aren't a be all, end all solution.
