Hey, i'm looking at getting a DJ/Street bike on a budget.. i've found a decent 04 Norco One25 w/ DJ III's.. but my question is does a lot of people have problems with QR axles?

He's bin through 2 hubs (formula and deore) and i'm just wondering how bad they are??

I own a big hit with 20mm axle and i have no problems with it.. will it feel weird on a weaker hub??

And finally what are decent QR hubs which won't cost me a fortune..?

Thnx,
Kev

qr is not as stiff or strong as bolt up

u can convert most hubs from qr 2 bolt up axels cost about 15 dollars and about 20 bucks labour and u have a stronger stiffer hub

is there a noticable difference with the feeling of a less stiff/strong hub though?

does anyone have experience with the upgrade?? does it feel a whole world of difference?

Thanx,
Kev

A Through Axle Hub is no stronger than a similar QR hub.

The Bolt throughs have the following advantages
1. adds torsional stiffness to the forks. (you'd have to be pushing hard to notice)
2. less likely to work itself loose
3. Makes it less likely for the wheel to fall out after accidently forgetting to check the qr (Not an issue if you give your bike a proper check over before riding)

They also have the following disadvantages.
1 heavier (Again the average ride wouldn't notice)
2 For most types you will need tools to get the wheel off and on. This can be a pain if you need to pull the wheel off to get it into the car.

u can convert most hubsI dunno about that, once you get to proprietry axles and sealed cartridge bearings, you're in for a complex job.

Hey Kev,

What I've found is that adaptable hubs like the Dice HooDoo (http://www.dirtworks.com.au/newsite/images/stories/cataloguemtb/cat_mtb_20_lge.jpg) where you can run 20mm Thru-axle or 9mm QR are best. This is due to the axle going through the hub being 20mm and therefore is going to be stiffer than the standard hollow 9mm QR axle that you get on most other hubs. They have sealed cartridge bearings which are as strong as you'll ever need and can be replaced easily and cleanly (although I've never needed to).

The adaptable front hub also makes your wheel more versatile as you can swap it between bikes if you need. I have a Diatech adaptable front hub (http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?Affiliate=1&PageID=30&SKU=HU3730) on my Sasquatch and I regularly swap that wheel over to my D8 when I want a different tyre on my bike.

Now to be honest, the hubs you have been using weren't the highest quality but if you're after something cheap the imperial one does seem fairly good too but I would be after something adaptable.

I havn't used them.. i'm still yet to buy the bike.. the person i'm buying it off of has been thru those hubs..

I like the idea of the adaptable ones.. but then its gunna cost me more.. but i guess for the better?

Ahhh... sorry for the confusion. Still, those hubs aren't great and I would definately reccomend sealed cartridge bearings.
