Definatly take a look at the Marzocchi Dirt jumper range. They will be the go.
For $350 you might as well jam a steel rod in your headtube and it will feel more plush if you want something new. If second hand you can find something like Marzocchi DJs for 200 - $350 depending on how worked they are but anything of decent quality you can find for $300 will have been worked harder than a mule.
One of the banner ads are advertising Manitou Stance Statics for $350. These come in 80 or 100mm travel & QR or 20mm dropouts.
There have been mixed reports about statics though, some have worked perfectly while otrhers have crappe dout immediatly...
Try & find some 2nd hand DJIII's or Psylos

He should be looking for DJ II's or I's.. III's (3's) were QR axle..
Hope this help.. :)
Good call, i should probably read a bit better.
But it will be hard to find even 2nd hand DJI or DJIIs for around $300. Someone was selling 2002 20mm Psylos for $250 a while ago, it might have been No Skid Marks or BB7 Rider
