Dude it was always going to happen. The only thing that was in question was the venue for the date. Which has now been changed from the show grounds to princess park or something like that. That is for the Melb one. However the big day out wont run out of steam yet. I know the 2 blokes who started it and they are saying that there is no chance that they will stop it anytime soon as it is the best music festival that goes all around aust. I assure you aswell the festivals Financial status is fine, so there will be no worries from that point of view.
You want metal should have gone the past to years man. I agree that the line up thus far isn't the greatest, however some of the best bands get released on the final anoucment. The people who run the Big Day Out know that they draw a very big "Metal" population and without doubt will hopefully have something lined up for us. Dont start whinging yet its only early days! Whinge when the final anoucment comes out!

There is nothing wrong with AFI, they are only the best band ever!!!
But yeah, the list isn't very good, Franz Ferdinand and End of Fashion???
Not my cup of tea, but they could be alright live.
It does say the list is not complete yet, so hopefully there will be some other heavier stuff.
Haven't ever been before, but am definately going next year.
Don't want to miss out on AFI.

They always save the best for last. Like in 04 when they announced Fear Factory 2 days b4 the event. Shame that they put all the metal acts on in the middle of the day now (like a pit isnt hot enough).

Yeah I just heard that if Melbourne doesnt get a venue then it wasnt going to happen at all. Dont forget I'm from Perth news travels real slow over here.
I was there last year, System rocked. Ive only missed 2 since 1995.
It does sound a bit wingey doesnt it. But Ive only been waiting since Febuary this year to see whos playing. :D
Big Day Out.....Its my Royal Show!!

Hm personally i think that system played the worst show ever in melbourne. Looked like wanna be ac dc doesnt go in my books. There songs arent as good as toxicity and there first album either. I must say John Butler, Slipknot, Hatebreed, Beasty Boys all played really well. Hatebreed owned melbourne!

Ooh looks pretty good so far. Pretty stoked about the White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand. Both bands are amazing live and I'm listening to the new Franz album just now...
Iggy's a legend and the Kings of Leon are pretty good live as well.
Hopefully princess park will be a better venue and that they'll have shelved the ridiculous policy of not being allowed to take drinks out of the beer tent.
Failing that there's always the sideshows.

$110 + BF. bit pricey for the line-up so far. I think they'll need to lift their game a bit higher before I'd go for it...

haha yeah I saw so many 14 year old girls getting handed over to the bouncers during Slipknot. They just dont last that long down the front.
I reckon they put all the metal acts in the middle of the day so you dont get to pissed and go around belting shit outta people in the pit, even though thats what some people seem to think its all about.
And yes we are hardcore :D So you just stay over there watching coldplay "rock-out" ;)
Ahh bloody hell. Another BDO, another pile of whinging. On every forum I've been, there's the same complaints:
"looks like crap"
"there's no metal"
"those bands suck"
"I can't justify going"
"where's the dance?"
"it's too commercial"
"blah blah blah"
Far out, only one announcement made and people expect it to be the greatest music festival ever, comprising of all their favourite bands.
It amazes me how every year, when only a partial list of bands is announced, some people carry on as if they're cheated, and that the organisers owe them something.
You'd think they'd already bought their ticket on false pretences...
News flash: BDO is a mainstream festival, to cater for a middle of the road audience. Everyone has different tastes, and to pull a quarter of a million people to 6 seperate events takes more than niche appeal. It's a simple fact, something we've had to deal with for the past 5 years at least. Yet every year the same gripes are aired in vain. Sheesh...
Anyway, that's my rant over, not directed at anyone specifically, but just a general venting about what I've seen accross 4 big forums today.
So, now that's done, my comments on the day:
Looks pretty good so far :) I go every year regardless of what the first announcement lists, as it's always makes for a good day of many musical marvels. But to know that Mars Volta, AFI, White Stripes, Wolf+Cub and the rest are playing makes it even more appealing. I guess I know that if I want metal, I'll go to a pub metal gig or MFTB, if I want niche bands, I'll hunt them down in the small venues they occur in, if I want a specific music experience I'll go to a festival dedicated to one genre... it's the variety that makes BDO great, whilst the best of the best isn't always on show, a culmination of 10 hours of constant music in 5 seperate arenas makes it great. I await Jan 26 with anticipation of a whole days fun

I'd hardly say this thread is full on whinging. And you forget you Sydney siders get EVERY INTERNATIONAL ACT that tours Australia and never have to talk loudly to get noticed, unlike shitsville over here.
BDO is the best festival we have, and I'm going regardless of ticket price or set list. I just simply love the atmosphere.

Hold On one second here rik. Yes i give you that it is to caterd for middle of the road audience. However, there are 2-3 distinct crowds that seems to appear more than any other. This is "Ravers", "Metal heads or goths" whichever you would like to label them as and "punks". These 3 distinct "groups" seem to have more people there than any other "group" of people. I know by me saying groups of people may seem abit ignorant or social based. Also i recall myself being up front row for Scribe, Beasty Boys and John Butler, altough i would be put in the "class" of "metalhead/goth".
Take alook at some of the previous years acts, metal acts, techno dj acts and those sorts of things. You will see that there are extremely big bands playing. This is why some people are complaining this year. As i have already stated though it is the first anoucment of which there are normally 3 in total.
Sorry for directing it mainly at you Rik!

When i heard the first line up announcement i was stoked i thought everyone else would be too, I mean the white strips and Franz Ferdinand are two of the hottest bands getting around right now. Iggy pop and the stooges are one of the creators of punk, Mars volta are incredible live plus there is a whole heap of other good act like kings of leon, faker, AFI and Wolf+Cub. The organizers dont owe the public anything they are running a business, if you dont like the lineup dont go.

Unfortunatly you can't argue with a crowd mate. Last years big day out sold out in almost every state. It would be ashame going from Sell out crowds, to half capacity. Its a business and there is demand for all genres and this is why the two blokes who first organised it were sucessful its because they catered for ALL music taste.

i'll defiantely be trying to get there!
i've just gotta find someone my age who won'tpiss me off the whole day with their 'where's britany spears?' comments!
that and someone who is keen to get in the pits!
looking forward to it though!
i'm another who goes regardless of the 1st announcment - too much fun to miss out on.
Most bands that are on the BDO line up do seperate shows anyway, & they are usually better & in more intimate venues than an outdoor arena. Instead of spending $300-400 on BDO ticket, drink & drugs, just spend the same amount on the seperate shows of the 3 bands that you really want to see.
Thats what I will be doing. BDO sucks (imo) at homebush or at least the times i have been there I have had bad drugs.

Yeh, they never sell good drugs at BDO...
The lineups @ BDO are always good. No question there. But for whatever reason some of the acts at BDO are farkin shithouse.
I reckon Homebake, Falls and even the likes of Field Day offer equal value.
I too reckon the singular concerts are better, because the actual performances are better...Chillies at SCG - unforgetable!

Well a few people aren't overly impressed with the line up, but for a first announcement I reckon its the best line up in several years, last 2 yrs i've been keen to make my 1st trip form the country to go to it and havent bothered cos I thought the line ups were ordinary at best.
The ones I'm very keen to see and Iggy + Stooges, Kings of leon, Wolf & Cub and the mars volta, though most of the other os bands seem pretty good, and so far the aussie bands are pretty good as well.
I'd say just on the basis of the bands so far I'm gonna find the money to go.

Metal brings the masses. I'd love a festival like Ozzfest or those huge european festivals, where they have a huge death metal and black metal stages, for Australia. It would be excellent, were it to be held in Newcastle.

ive been twice and both times ive gone into the beer tent- never been id'd or anything, i think they have worked out that by charging $110 for the tickets, and making the cans of beer $6 they have pretty much eliminated all the underage drinking via economcs. :p
what i want to know is -when is the final line up released? like they always add bands prior to ticket sales etc -cause at the moment that line up wouldnt be worht going to unless they paid for your entry and made all the booze a respectable price like $3

Is that genuine about the pixies? I've checked the website and there's nothing there- although they are still showing the first press release so it might not of been updated.
Anyway I bloody well hope it's true! Missed three chances to see them this summer in the UK because I was either stuck offshore or my mates weren't up to flying over to Holland to catch a band they'd seen last year:mad:

No the big day out isnt about black metal or death metal bands granted. However metal of any sort has a big part in the BIG DAY OUT whether you a avid support of the stuff like Dumbellina and i are. Or whether you think its talentless noise. Look at all the previous BDO line ups you will see countless metal acts. To name a few Metallica, Fear Factory, Slipknot, Hatebreed, Mudvayne. In the end you must look at this as a business bringing big crowds to see world famous acts is what bdo is about. So M_G your are wrong in the area about bringing masses isnt what the big day out is about.
However it is proven that metal brings the masses. This being my 3rd BDO next year, i must say i see more goths/punks that any other social group. Look at my earlier posts in this thread and you will see that i stated those two social groups along with ravers, are the clear majority of people going to these things.
Get a few facts right before you come out and say what the BDO is and isnt about.

OK, so you're saying that goths and punks are into metal and that by having metal at the shows you will get these popular subcultures of 'punks' and 'goths' coming along???...huh...thats weird, I wouldve thought the punks would have been into punk (eg the stooges)...
but hey if you were managing it, do you think having slipknot and hatebreed would outsell White Stripes and Franz Ferdinand?? its not everyones cup of tea, but if you dont like it, as I said, go to a metal specific festival and dance youre arse off...the bands at BDO arent my favourite either, Id love to have a proper Warped Tour again, but it aint gonna happen...so go along, get pissed, try to enjoy the music (i know i still will) and most of all enjoy the people and atmosphere...peace out...

Metal brings the masses. I'd love a festival like Ozzfest or those huge european festivals, where they have a huge death metal and black metal stages, for Australia. It would be excellent, were it to be held in Newcastle.
I read an interview with Ozzy about 2 years ago and he said that Ozzfest costs about US$1 million per night to run. They have to recoup those costs and more, before they even consider bringing the show over here. In Europe and America its not such a big problem. Black Sabbath usually headlines Ozzfest and they draw massive crowds over there. Ozzfest is regularly the biggest grossing tour, knocking off the usual commercial pop stuff.
Here? Metallica usually won't go much bigger than the Sydney Entertainment Centre for their own concerts (16,000 capacity?) and they are one of the most popular metal bands on the planet.
Its just that Australia doesn't have the audience for a show like that.
Held in Newcastle? There must be a big metal community or something up there. A guy I worked with used to host a metal radio show in Newcastle, and he also brought down a heap of mates to Metal for the Brain. There were also heaps of other newcastle people there too.

so yeah. and If I dont end up liking the set list, Ill sell the ticket for an inflated price.

Shall we define punk then? More punks went to see hatebreed and slipknot over any punk or alternative band last year. If you look at hatebreeds tour in 2001 you will find out that they sold out every show. When slipknot came last year they sold out every show. Further more when metallica came people flocked to the big day out and there concerts. I would direct money else where if australia had a metal specific festival but we dont do we. Now m_g you look at any metal band that comes to melbourne you will find out that 99% of there shows sell out. So on that basis metal show be played at the big day out from a business perspective.
if australia had a metal specific festivalMetal for the Brain:confused:

Yes but metal for the brain isn't a national tour. Yes its a festival if i could get to metal of the brain id go. Id say that is more of a gig than a festival personally
Brisbane, Canberra, Perth... 12 hours of music, surely that counts as a festival? All depends on your definition I guess.

Hmm, theres a thing like that im melbourne called metal fest but it went down hill 12 hours of metal but as the people who are organising it change every year the line up is really in consistant. I wonder why they dont add melbourne to metal for the brain. Alot of metalheads down here.
