View Full Version : Polo...or no Polo?

Just noticed a few comments on polo shirts and such. Who here is a closet fashion whore in ways like: Riding gear, shoes, brands (ahem, TLD), shirts etc. I'm a regular wearer of polo shirts casually- not like real try hard stylish polo with all emblems and writing you can't read and shit, but like just plain casual polos.

Just wondering what people ride in casually, and in racing. Casually, I almost always ride in a dark polo shirt of some sort, with my trusty plain old CK jeans and globes/vans skate shoes. Individual style for me :D

What peoples views on fashion, such as the pink shirt craze, writing you can't understand on shirts, the proliferation of mens flared jeans and such. I've also noticed a certain leather jacket being sold cheap from Just Jeans last few months, and in a 5 days in the city last week, I saw this very same jacket worn on people no less than 30 times. Oh, how fashionable people are.

In summary, Polo shirts = win.

Polo shirts are great until you crash in them, then they give you pretty bad "carpet burn", of which I am suffering from right now :o
Oh yeh, and upturned collar should be punished with the collar being cut off, taking the head with it.

ive been the very proud owner of a couple of cantebury polos for a long long time now and they are served me pretty well. comfy.

however i cant stand those industrie polos with industrie on the underside of the collar, why on earth would you want a shirt that is identical to almost every other guy's.

when it comes to riding i have a few old favourite t shirts and a singlet and a couple of pairs of beige shorts that have served me pretty well for ages now.

as for the general t shirt market you are talking about with the indistinguishable writing and pink colours etc. i think as long as a shirt is different it has potential. there are a lot of australian based companies that do really small runs of cool t shirts but thats getting a bit boutique and i wont incriminate myself any further [/fashion whore]

What if it's pink or purple? My girlie gave me a pink polo before she left...

Industrie! Argh. Such crap. All the guys walk in herds of 10 wearing Industrie with upturned collars, hanging around shopping centres. After they realize that most normal females won't like a guy who spends more time with their hair then them, maybe they'll do the right thing, and all go into a changing room at Industrie. Together.

You can't go wrong with a good polo though- small collar, variable chest showage. W00t.

Collars down. Polos are fine, just turn those collars down. Those Industrie ones are so lame, I can't believe so many people buy them and turn the collar up. So many fashion victims around the city it's hilarious. Down with wristbands too, they're not cool ok, just useless.

I occasionally wear a polo shirt to work (normally I have to wear business stuff) and they are comfy but still look pretty naff. I never wear them outside work - I usually wear those Bonds raglan tshirts because they have low wind resistance on my ride to work :D

I personally have an industries polo which i picked up on sale at city beach for somewhere around the $25 mark (Just talking to scotty, the industries polo's i dont see too many of in brisbane as he does in scotty land) , but i did not realise it had that stupid "Industries" text under the coller untill i was hanging it up (I would never wear my coller up like a freakn' jock, just looks like you rushed to put your clothes on before going out IMO), I only got it because it came in a cool green colour i couldn't find anywhere els, and what kinda fasion whore can walk past a bargain:rolleyes:.

I also have normal $10 k-mart polo's which are AWSOME (they have a nearly identical logo to ralph lorren (spelling:confused:), So i can get a $10 polo and look like a fasion freak while im riding:cool:

As quoted above, those wrist bands are CRAPPY, unless you buy them to support the cause and not just to look "cool".

Im a fasion whore, but i dont get stuff everyone els has (scribbly t-shirts). (Except for my industries polo apparently, ive only seen a couple, but fuck it, i picked it up for lower than half price and its like the coolest colour in school.:p)

i like polos as long as they aint metro ones. The best ones are old school lacoste or penquin ones which you find at op shops, vintage shops or ebay. On the topic of the whole metro sexual thing, i have a few female friends who are into "fashion" most of them want to make a career out of it .They have told me many times that they would rather a guy who has his own style( an exaple would be maybe a bands t shirt with some old school levis jeans) as opposed to someone who has gone out and bought a industie polo and some metro jeans. This kind of reltates back to the saying "fashion cna be bought, style cant"

They're good for times when you need to get around a dress code - like work, but yeah, put that freakin' collar down...

Personally, I prefer loud, vintage polyester shirts - they're cool (temperature wise) for riding in but do get a bit smelly..

But maybe that's just me?

good old denim jeans, a black or dark blue tee and a hoodie if it's cold along with the trusty DC's
not about style just about easy gear to wear that feels comfortable and in the case of denims and hoodies, protects you if you go down
(btw i ride park and dj's)
as for polo's, i have a few and yes do occasionally wear the collar up:o
however this isn't a fashion statement, it's just i have fair skin and don't like being burnt on the neck:p
and as for pink shirts, i don't think i can phrasemy opinion on them without insulting someone or just using a heap of swear words
people wearing them are meant with:
"nice shirt, do they make it for men?"
"hey mate your sister called, she wants her shirt back"

coller up=college boy.
Not attractive to anyone but other college boys and college girls.
Melb Uni college kids are the pits and have too much money to piss away on a polo that costs $100+
I mean what's the point??? It was made in a sweat shop somewhere for 10c...that makes the upturned polo wearer pretty stupid in my book...

What I don't get is how they're always telling you how great it is to be out of highschool and in the big world without a uniform...
whilst standing in a group of no less than 3...wearing the same brand of polo...and the same jeans...and the same stupid plastic thongs...with the same "trendy" mohawk hair...and the same sunglasses.
yup great to be out of that uniform...

I do look how scared they are when they have to walk somewhere alone though :p

p.s I do actually have a few college friends, but they don't fit in an dcan't wait to get out. No offence to those guys :)

T-Shirts all the way. I can't even bring myself to wear a jersey for riding let alone a pink shirt for clubbing (nevermind the fact I'd be in serious trouble wearing anything pink in the places I go). T-Shirts all the way I reckon.

Actually I do own 1 polo - a SMP one I've had for years. It's made of some miracle material that never gets creased so I can stuff it in a bag for road trips and wear it if we go to some la-de-da place for food or booze.

colleges (at Melbourne Uni anyways, can't speak for others) are like big single roomed dorms or perhaps a hostel. You live there and pay somewhere between $9000 and $15000 per acedemic year for the privelage(sp?). You get kicked out on holidays.
They are kind of like a club as well, very "Pack mentality". eg if you live there, you are part of a "team" who is in direct rivalry with the other "teams" (there are 5 or 6 on campus colleges and another 4 or 5 off campus ones)
Unless of course the other "team" is non-college in which case its ANY college onto the rest.

They are very elite, mostly private school kids end up in there along with interstate and country kids who get priority for not living in melb. Infamous for their jock-ness. The guys = footy/cricket, girls = netball/hockey/whatever else. They all play tennis on their private college courts and have special tutors available to them to help them pass their arts/commerce/law/being groomed for daddy's multinational corp. degrees...

yeah but the thing is, that isnt even decent fashion to begin with. i wouldnt call myself a metrosexual but im probably guilty of being a fashion whore.

but i dont see how anything that is mass produced like those industrie polo shirts could ever be appealing.

while im sure our (myself and atdi - although our music tastse is probably similar ;)) fashion sense is probably pretty different, i think we can both agree that to look good probably means you dont look like every other 16 year old with a mowhawk.

polo shirts rock, just the plain coloured ones, not all that splattered paint etc

If i'm just cruising around the street then i like to wear polo's with denim shorts or jeans. But for riding, i just wear some hardwearing shorts and an old tee

straight, non-industrie, not-pink, collar-down, non-metrosexual polo's are fine.

and old tee's are the way to go for riding.

F#ck Polo shirts. I've always hated them. If I want to show off chest hair (of which I have an abundant forest) I wear nice pants, nice shoes, and a SHIRT! you know, collar, buttons down the length...

I ride in jeans and a T-shirt. I race in jeans and a T-shirt. I wear casually.... jeans and a T-shirt. The only disruption to the formula is going out - more expensive jeans, more expensive shoes, and a long sleeve shirt, normally. I do like some of the more "interesting" washes and destructive measures on jeans, T-shirts are normally plain, band, or vintage/retro with something interesting on them. I wear Vans, because I like them, I have 4 pairs in rotation.

Nope, no polo shirts. Never. Last time I owned one was when I was a kid.

I was always under the assumption that hawaiian shirts were for "gay guys and big fat party animals, and Bart don't look like no big fat party animal to me!"

Sorry folks, I couldn't have posted a more obvious quote but can i say this: If hawaiian shirts are such a heinous fashion crime how come we all end up wearing them with massive pride whenever we hit Bali, Thailand, Fiji etc. on holiday?

I'm not defending this sort of behaviour, I'm as guilty as the next man when it comes to the pissed up " hey, let's all buy mad shirts!" shenanigans but I do feel like I've just been caught wanking by my gran whenever the holiday snaps surface a few months later!

There's nothing big, tough, Ironic or clever about them. Can we please pay heed to Homer and leave the Hawaiian shirt to it's rightful supporters?

So are the mozzies where you ride so Anti-Fashion that they'll refuse to have a munch on anyone with a raised collar?

Does it also work with pink and/or ironic mullets?

Is that the most ridiculous thing I've heard since I got up?

No, its not actually.
I wear a polo with a longsleeve tee over the top and I dont seem to get bitten. Others who dont cover up get bitten.
Mosquitos in my area have been found to carry the Bairnsdale Virus which is a flesh eating virus and heaps of people have been infected. Dont believe me? Come and get bitten yourself then.

The bit about the bairnsdale virus is true. But if you were to worried about being bitten i dont think you would be riding there at all. Do u a mask to so your face is covered up.
