Will the idiots who post photos suposedly showing us some interesting detail of their bike learn to use their bloody cameras!
This post was inspired by pictures of a fracture in a "GT rucas"
for fucks sake people there is a minimum distance that any lens can focus, you have to be a certain distance away from the bike/subject. A large (close up) blurry out of focus picture does not show more detail than a small(further back) in-focus one! assuming same size/pixel picture.
If you have a macro lens, turn the bloody thing on.
Your better off taking the photo in focus and then using some digital zoom post processing, than getting close and blurring everything.
Dont you look at the photos before you post them? cant you see its crap and blurry?
I think my point has been made.
end rant.

I am saying people should learn to use their cameras and take proper pics that actually show what they are trying to say/explain.
sorry there were a couple of typos that made things a bit vague, fixed now. Shouldn't post while angry.

Instead of yelling at them, perhaps you should explain that most lenses will have the distances between which they can focus labelled on the front of the lens casing.
It should say something like f1.0 - infinity (that little sideways 8)
which means your lens won't focus unless you are a minimum distance of 1 meter away from the subject...(and it will focus easily on everything greater than 1m)
Most cameras will tell you whether you can focus on the subject or not in auto focus mode by flashing a warning light or some such when you semi-depress the shutter button to make it focus.
Hope this helps!

Er the F1.0 refers to the smallest F stop or aperture possible. The F value is a ratio of the size of the hole letting the light through compared to the focal length of the lens. The bigger this is the faster you can shoot. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the minimum focal distance.
I was thinking of telling people about those numbers but not all lenses have them.
Here goes.
These numbers are an example using a canon EF 75-300 III
There should be a few numbers on the front/sides of the lens. The F 3.5-4.6 means that this is a zoom lens and that at the smallest focal length the max aperture is 3.5 while at full zoom the max aperture is 4.6.
75-300mm refers to the minimum and maximum focal lengths, this may also be a single number on prime lenses, ones that don’t have a zoom.
Somewhere else on the lens you will find a picture of a single flower. Next to this should be a measurement in feet and meters. This is the minimum focal distance. This is how far away from the subject you need to be for the lens to focus.
The only other number is proceeded by ø in this case it is ø58mm which means the lens is a 58mm diameter, and thus uses 58mm filters.
Although if you have a fully manual lens their will be a fucusing window like lil'stany said. In which case it should be really easy to see what the min focus distance is should be a scale with both feet and meters ranging from the min focus out to about 22-25 feet or 6 meters, which is optical infinity. But I rather doubt people with this sort of lens would not know how to use one.
If anyone actually wants to know more ask me and I can answer most questions and give some nice links.

tnakie, i agree, some people just have daver syndrome when it coes to photos. it really isnt that hard guys, use zoom rather than getting in close physically, use some fill flash and if you have a digi, zoom in on the preview so you can see if it is out of focus and ffs, LOOK at the photo on your pc screen before you post it up.. it isnt that hard to see if a photo sucks
(oh, and remember to take the plastic covering off your lens before using the camera!)
