View Full Version : who has the longest commute
Im looking for a new house at the moment and riding to work is a consideration...Im curious how far you guys commute to work (by bike of course)...
must be under normal conditions, that is, you do it often, not just a once a month thing for fun...

my ride to work is only 3km at the moment but next year im out of home and itll be a 15km ride to work i figur its not that far but its far enough if its pi$$en with rain.
3km now, used to be 16. I'd rather 10-15km than the short sprint I have now, at least I could get some regular exercise that way
bout a 30km ride.
balmoral to rydelmere. but i cheat n get a train from north sydney to parra, lol people give you the funniest looks with a roadie on the train lol.
but its only for another week then i got a cruisy 6km ride to cbd.

25km, Loftus to Surry Hills, usually about three times per week unless I get very enthusiastic.
I'm sure that's the max I can do regularly - much longer than that eats too much into eating and sleeping time.

60km per day - Chatswood to Blacktown and return. Everyday, 5 days a week, rain or shine.
The increase in my fitness since starting this 10 months ago has been phenomenal. I cannot say enough about the benefits of commuting as part of a training program. Bring it! :D

My ride to work is 30km 5 days (150km a week) on my road MTB. I feel wrong without it now! I always like getting to work, showering and then walking into the office feeling super fresh with a nice slow burn in my legs :D

Totally agree. I haven't ridden my 3 mtb's or roadie at all through winter but have been riding the two speed crapper 10km each way to uni 5 days a week and to work 2 days a week.
Then suddenly I get asked to do a 12 hour race, manage to lap in the top 3% of all riders times on the rigid singlespeed. Our 4 man team also manages to win our category and gets 3rd out of every team in the race.
Supports the best advice you can ever get for training, 'just ride lots'.
about 6 minutes if I get the lights....
about 5:25 if I run 'em :p

My trip varies depending on what mood I am. Min 30km round trip either on the roadbike or singlespeed. Or if I ride the I might ride one of three xc tracks that are on the way home. Then I do about 40-80km for the day.

Mine is 13kms including a really solid hill climb in it:
http://www.cycle2max.com/c2m/climbs.nsf/Vtrial/EA4F0F9C8757D0AD69256BC20035C178?OpenDocument
Fastest time up the hills is 12mins clean. Thought I would attack it the next day and break into the 11 min marker. It never happened.
At least I live at the top of the hill. 60kmph+ on the way to work, covered in sweat when I get home. Perfect.
I could hit some DH tracks on the way to work, but then would have to ride the rest of the way on a MTB. I do it occasionally to keep it interesting.

It changes depending on where I am staying... Usually 15 to 17km... But occasionally 32km If I am staying at the property in Little River. Use the roadie on both... And occasionally, I take the MTB, and rip a few quick laps around this XC / Bike trail loop and clock upto 40km, sometimes 50km...
During summer I plan to do abit more riding after work, straight from work...

I ride to uni about 25km a day with some pretty annoying hills, there isn't really any flat bits on the way it's all up and down which is a bit of a pain.

about 35 km all up in a day. was a wuss last winter and drove but this year I've stuck it out and have been riding to work for about the past 12 months. It's great now the nicer weather is starting up in Melbourne.
A daily commute is a great way to train without really feeling like you're doing anything. i try to work on my spinning on the single-speed and a little tip I got from RBR.com that I think is making me much stronger is riding in the big ring on my roadie all the time. After the first week of that my legs were sore all weekend but now it's gravy. The difference when I drop from a 53 back to a 38 on the SS is crazy.
Looking forward to seeing if this riding is actually doing anything for me when I race in the Kona 24, I'm hoping not to get blown completely away in my first race (first lap anyway, then it's a beer/camping weekend with the mates).

I have three commuting routes Lakemba -> City:
(1) Cooks River C/way, Sydney Park, Alexandria, Redfern = 19 km one way (no real hills but heavy traffic from Tempe), about 45 mins.
(2) Ashfield, Summer Hill, Hawthorne Canal, Lilyfield Rd, Anzac Bridge, Pyrmont, City = 20 km one way (a couple of climbs (eg Lilyfield Rd)), about 50 mins (42 mins, fastest time).
(3) Homebush (via Cooks River C/way), Rhodes, Canada Bay, Five Dock, Haberfield, Henly Marine Drive, Iron Cove Bridge, Rozelle, Anzac Bridge, Pyrmont, City = 35 km one way (about 75 mins).
It helps to mix up the routes to avoid familarity and boredom.
I also have an extended training route from Bankstown -> Parramatta -> City (via M4 c/way and Canada Bay c/way), can't remember the distance (I think around 70 km, one way), that I do rarely.
My commute is 33k each way (Balmain to Wetherill Park), but quite often on Tuesday and Thursday morning I'll leave much earlier (5am) and do laps of Homebush with the roadie bunch on the way to work, making about a 70km trip to work and a 33km trip home.
Luckily I can leave clothes and bikes etc at work and don't have to carry anything:D

Please tell me you're not doing it on your STP 1 with the seat waaaaay down. :)

Harbord (above Manly) to Newtown - 22km. (Sydney)
Well, that's if I take the Military road route most of the way. I measured the distance roughly in my car since I don't have a cycle computer.
With the different variations of routes from Manly to Newtown, it might be longer or shorter in different incarnations, since, like the others said, it's important to have variety in your commutes!
Time is about 1 hour being cautious and following all road rules. Best time is 50 minutes... done courier stylee.:D
Luckily I know a few people who take the same route... soon-to-be-lycra-clad Naz is one of them!:p

I am doing 15km each way at the moment 3 times a week (have to use the car at work somedays which I hate) but it has a killer climb each way which gives me a work out.
Used to be alot longer though at 45km each way, talk about getting fit! Was working as a motor mechanic, physical work all day then the ride home was pretty damn hard. Glad those days are over.
But I am now starting to leave earlier and do some of the great hills we have in Newcastle in the morning just to extend it a bit.
I am also lucky because I can do Glenrock rides on the way to work if I want, that is the best way to start the day!
Word to all commuters on here, I say let the petrol prices keep going up so there will be more of us! Nothing beats the feeling of getting to work and having that slow burn in your legs as mentioned above.

balmoral to rydelmere.Gah, that's like going to the arse end of the world, surely. :)
Anyway, my commute is 26'ish km each way - Rydalmere (!) to Woolloomooloo. Not doing it enough at the moment (working late during winter is a pain, and now need to get back into it), but was doing it a couple of days a week - it was even threatening to get me fit for a while there.
I'm nowhere near as gnardc0re as Dunk, but I've also thrown in a few loops around Homebush on the way to or from work just to get a few more k's in, but too often the wind is being cruel on the way home ...

LOL! Fully! My wife and I just laugh at the raising petrol prices and how the general public is freaking out, going into savings mode, crying to the government (like THEY could do anything) and such!
Can you believe that there's a guy around the northern beaches of Sydney who's trying to get elected on the platform that he'll lower fuel prices? BWAHAHAHAHA! I don't know who's dumber! That idiot for such a moronic campaign promise, or the morons that actually end up voting for this guy! (Actually, it's pretty obvious who's dumber there....).
Supposedly, he's going to get rid of road tolls as well?
What a fucking idiot.

I commute to school on Thursdays, it's a fairly short ride from St Ives to Killara. Only 15-20 mins on the SS.
The SS should make the commute more enjoyable:)
80km's round trip .... depending on what way i go ....(on a roadie) trying to do it most days with the way petrol is....

I'm trying to convince myself (and SWMBO) to do the commute from Engadine to the CBD. Would be about 40km each way - anyone doing the trip (Shire to City) who cares to share the best route?

I feel so...lame
I ride from Clovelly side of Randwick to Ultimo. I think it is about 6km. 20 minutes there, 25 home. On a SS 24" wheeled DMR Rhythm with the seat low :o (but it is fun!!)
I amgoing to build MYSELF a commuter when I get some money & attempt to do a lap of centennial park to & from work (hahahahahahahhaaha)

I do roughly 20 kms each way from Bilgola to Manly on the XC dually. Then catch ferry into city and ride up to end of Hyde Park from Circular Quay. Almost died the first time I rode the hill out of Newport but my fitness has increased incredibly since I started doing it.

I feel the same way about the Spit.
First few times sucked. Then after a while, it wasn't so bad. Now it's just routine. But strangely, it still sucks?:p
i used to commute to uni everyday, un til i moved.
now although it's short, the only way to uni is to clim 2 huge hills.

Those who can mix up their commute with singletrack are so lucky. Last time I had that luxury was when I lived in Canberra. I used to commute in via Ainslie.
Also at lunchtime I'd ride with a fellow bike nut (a roadie) up Black Mtn - he'd do laps up and back - I'd bomb the sweet (but illegal) singletrack down and around the mtn.

Yeah, that's the ultimate...
I lived in Whistler for almost 9 years... Riding your bike from one through a combination of the single track and the Valley Trail was dreamy!
Makes me shake my head at the thought of "What the fuck am I doing here?" when I'm fighting my way through the traffic and the smog on Military Road.
:(
My speedo tells me its 1km from my garage to the back door of work where I leave my bike... And I still drive when it rains :D
Beats walking, that's for sure... it's downhill most of the way home!

I do roughly 20 kms each way from Bilgola to Manly on the XC dually.hey, tried the Crescent Road rollercoaster yet?
same route for me too. Work is in North Manly.
I'm up on Bilgola Plateau though, so there's a 500m - 1km uphill bushwalk on the way home, depending on which trail I take.
Grandview Drive is great fun in the morning...
40min there / 1hr back (ish) on a rigid XC machine with roadie slicks.
Right on 15km each way to uni, with a bit of singletrack thrown in if I'm in the mood. A lot of it is pretty flat though, fortunately. I'm proud to say I'm still unfit enough to take a good 45 mins each way :o

Wow 40 min is quick. I managed to do 50 mins last week and that felt like I was pushing hard all the way.

I am going to start commuting to school next year, about 12km one way, therefore 24km per day. It's really good because my step sister has her P's so she can take my school bag with all my books and stuff, ill carry a small camelback with a pump, tube and all your usual bits. Then when I get to school, get changed into my school clothes, get my school bag n im rdy!
