I just ordered an iMac G5 20"
Its going to take 3 weeks to arrive.
I'm pretty keen on it and have asked a few poeple that I know, about them, so far no bad comments - and apparently they do the Job!
I'm going to be using it for some vid/picture editing type stuff.
Anybody got some relative comments??

I haven't really got anything worthwhile to add except to say welcome to the fold, I'm sure you'll be delighted with it. If you want to completely geek out on all things Apple there's an Aussie Apple forum over at http://www.appletalk.com.au .

i use the lowest model at school for tech drawing and they are very good, but i have also used a power G5 and theres no comparasentin power speed and most other things, but none the less they are still a mean machine, the only thing i would worry about is switching from a mac to a pc, it will take a while to get used to
I have a 20" iMac too.. I love it. You've made a good choice, comes with so many applications on it out of the box, really quiet, Tiger is amazing (dashboard is awesome, and on the iMac Spotlight is crazily fast at finding anything) and plus it looks really nice. Hope you enjoy it.

IMAC G5 is a nice unit.
I give it 2 years and you'll be able to install OSX on your custom built PC without an MAC sticker

Awsome choice mate. Weve got a 20" G5 iMac, it flys. The RAM was upgraded straight away to 1gig. With OSX more RAM can make a big diffrence. It'll be sweet for almost anything you want to do. Have fun on it.

Dual 2 GHz G5 with 1.5 GB of ram.
Great machine... I use it to video compositing and 3D on it.
It's just Apple's software that annoys me from time to time.
Better overall than a Windoze machine though....

Jono: Applications > Graphic Converter . I'm pretty sure that's installed by default on all recent macs.

hate to burst your bubble, but with a bit of effort it can be done now... all you need is the PC version of tiger (apple devs get it) and some small hacky utilities... one of the guys at uni has a limited version of it running on an acer tablet PC.
also, Apple have moved to intel as their next processor manufacturer. so hopefully we will see MacTel machines by january when the Apple Expo is on...
as for the G5 iMac, its a sweet machine. ive used a bunch of them at uni, its a good way to get into the Apple world... unfortunately notB4dinner has beaten me to it, but definately check out appletalk (www.appletalk.com.au)
also, red, check your PMs...

Imac G5's kick butt. I have a 2ghz 20 inch for home use and a dual 2.5ghz tower at work and i really don't notice the difference in performance. I'm not video editing or 3d rendering, but still labour the machines with pretty intensive photoshop stuff and they power.
The wide screen format is amazing, 20" wide screen wipes it's butt on a 21" CRT.
I'm just pissed i bought mine before the new model that just got released

I'm pretty glad I ordered when I did.
The couple of additions they have made are pretty sweet -
Remote
Mighty Mouse
Camera
and I guess the slight speedbump helps
did you up-grade anything? RAM?

pfft for that money id be running a dual dual core opteron setup, and those chips overclock insanely, ive seen a 1.8 stock running at 3ghz stable  imagine 2 of the dual core 2.4 per core stock opterons oc'ed with some decent ram running at ddr600 with decent timings oh wait that would make all you mac fanboys hide in shame, sorry:p

That new G5 is the fastest computer on the martket a the mommet, esp for video,3d and print work. They even look like apple might have put in a decent graphics card. This may improve their open gl performance and make it a decent 3d machine.

can someone with a g5 run a few benchmark programs like 3dmark 03 or 05 or aquamark3? im generally interested to know how well they score since they appear to be "so good" for video etc
edit: superpi times are also good :)

Go to the Apple site and you will see their results for the benchmark tests, dual g5 wins over and over again.

Anyone who buys a Mac or argues that pcs are better/worse because of the speed isn't addressing the real reasons for wanting one or the other. I wouldn't care less if a G5 is only half as fast as the latest PC box, (and who knows, that might even be the case) I'd still buy one.
The 20" iMac is a great bit of kit for the money. The screens can't compare to the real cinema displays and they're noticeably slower than the towers but at 1/3 the price, can't complain.

Go to the Apple site and you will see their results for the benchmark tests, dual g5 wins over and over again. If you want to pursue this argument I'd suggest finding a source with just a touch more independence. Most companies, and Apple is one of the worst offenders, tend to use only benchmarks that will paint their product in a positive light while willfully ignoring any benchmark that might show them underperforming in one area or another.

Fair enough, but I cant be bothered looking for others. Plus it looks as if the comparisons with other computers have been taken down. Now there's only comparisons with the powermacs against other powermacs (mmm quad core).

Here is bench mark page in cinema 4D/cinebench which gives you an open GL score plus scores for your rendering time with one or more processors. Note that with window 64 it gives you a 20% improvment, apple are still yet to release a true 64 bit OS. There is also no bench mark yet for the dual core G5, but the score would be between 1000-1400 at a guess.
For video apple is great they make their own software which is bloody good. They also put USB and firewire on their computers years before any other PC manafacture did so.
Apples are also quite often quicker in application like photoshop becasue of the way the use their memory. Photoshop along with most adobe software also runs much quicker on apple than PCs.
At the end of the day a computer is just tool to do a job.

after taking a unit at uni called Computer organisation and architecture, i found some of the true reasons why a PC will underperform to a mac, and its not because of the clock speed thing...
most of the time it deals with the way the processor gets instructions. the Mac processor (IBM970fx - old G5) takes instructions in blocks of 5 and theoretically 8, where a typical PC can only do 3 or 4. there is heaps to explain, and i have no time now... i will come back later and edit this post...

until the whole thing fell on its arse. i have worked with far too many pc boys who overclock this, and supe up that, and you walk into their studio, and the case it off the box, and there is shit everywhere, and the thing they mention over and over again is..... shit this is fast.... when it is running....
my old g5 workstation ran for 11 months without a restart or crash. i figure that is pretty good in terms of stability - oh yeah, and it was really quick.
