Teen critical after being skinned under learner's car

A teenager is fighting for his life after being dragged 140 metres under a car driven by an L-plater who had just left the same party in Sydney's northern beaches.

A fight had erupted outside the party in Vineyard Street, Mona Vale, shortly before the accident about midnight on Saturday, police said.

``There was an altercation between two groups at the party. It spilled out onto the street and they've continued to fight in the street,'' said Senior Constable Pep Reid at the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

The 17-year-old learner driver and the injured man knew each other and allegedly verbally abused one another during the altercation, Ms Reid said.

The 18-year-old was in the middle of the road when the collision with the Holden Commodore occurred near the intersection of Fabian Place, she said.

Police visited the party earlier in the evening following a noise complaint but had not been called when the fight happened, she said.

Inspector Paul Devaney at the Northern Beaches Local Area Command said: "The 18-year-old has fallen to the roadway and been run over and dragged what appears to be 140 metres under the vehicle.

"As a result of being dragged under the vehicle the 18-year-old male sustained massive degloving injuries - where the skin gets peeled off."

After the injured man was pulled from under the car, police say the driver drove to Dee Why police station where he was detained and interviewed. However no charges were laid at the time.

Police say tests revealed the driver had not been drinking alcohol.

The injured man was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The accident is now being examined by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them.
