View Full Version : The Flavour of India
I've just got back from India! It was an amazing experience and id definately recommend it to anyone interested in travelling. I felt very safe at nearly all times and the people were beautiful.
My schools main reason of going there was to be able to do a Community Project at a Tibetan School which was in need. We ended up painting for 2 days and the school was very greatful of what we did. We also went for a trek in Khangchenzonga National Park. We goto about 5800m which was amazing, and you guys should have seen the trekking trails there... a downhillers dream! We spent alot of time in Calcutta, Darjeeling and Kalimpong where there were endless opportunities to buy cheap souveniers and food or drink, within seas of people. Check my photos for more detail!
Any questions, feel free to ask! :)

Tibet doesnt exist anymore since it was taken over by China. I was in India for 25ish days. Spent most of my time in the state of Sikkim, which borders China, Nepal and Bhutan. In that pocket.

Sounds like a great experience for you all! I agree about the people, nearly every Indian (and Nepalese) person i have met have been extremely warm and friendly.
My question is, what was your most memorable moment? ie. when you close your eyes what is the first image or scene that you see?
Wow those are some amazing photo's you've taken, looks like you've got some skill with the camera. What are you using to take pics?

Tibet still exists. The local government maybe Chinese but the average man on the street will still call himself Tibetan. Kinda like saying Bali doesn't exist as it's governed by Indonesia...
BTW What were the curries like there? been hankering to go for years but always seem to end up in South East asia.

Yep, definately some very nice people. I didnt have a hassle with anyone, except some guy who told me to goto his house for a good time.
The first thing that comes to my mind is definately the streets in which i walked. They are so small, tight and windy, and filled with people. The plumbing is just done along the side of the road, so sometimes you find that you trip over random pipes. The smell also goes into my mind, so muggy and a bit rotten, but thats the flavours of india afterall! With cars horns blaring everywhere, its a miracle im not deaf. Indians are crazy drivers!
And1, im using a Panasonic FZ-2, its a pretty sweet cam, had it for a while now and its starting to age, so im looking at getting either a new model Panasonic FZ-30 or a DSLR. Pics came out great!

Yes it definately exists by heart, but unfortunately it has no control under the name "Tibet". All over the area there were posters telling China to get out, especially within the Tibetan Communities in India.
Curries were BRILLIANT. So many different flavours! They must have been healthy enough if i didnt get sick the whole trip. Im wrapped i didnt, some of the other kids had many cases of stomach problems.
Did you do some post processing on those photos??
Yes, all of them have borders, some have been sharpened, few changed contrasts, few changes in saturation etc.

Did you use photos shop? Reason i ask is becasue they look really crisp and i was a bit disapointed in how some of the contrasts of my o/s pics turned out.

Tibet still exists.
Not for much longer brother. The CCP is constantly pushing Han into the area to dillute nationalist feeling. Languages are being changed and history books rewritten (yes hello China, weren't you crying recently over Japan doing the same thing? Hmmmm!?) etc. They are doing the same thing in Xinjiang.
*Edit: Goddam it! I just realised that I forgot to say, wicked trip LTR!! How good is it to go somewhere so different like that? Hope you had a hell of a time and learnt heaps about the people, places and yourself.

Yeah, I am fairly well aware of the current situation in tibet. How come if a bunch of Slavs or Rwandans do something similar it's called genocide and there's a sizeable international outcry yet when the Chinese try and eradicate an entire culture there's not a peep. I know the Chinese aren't quite resorting to machetes and mass graves but it still amounts to the same thing.
Having said that it's been tried before in many of the former soviet states (e.g the Baltics) and it hasn't been too successful so I wouldn't pronounce Tibetan culture dead just yet. Hell there're still plenty of Jews around the world after over a thousand years of exile and persecution - shame they were adopting similar tactics themselves up until recently but c'est la vie-
BTW if you're stuck for reading material check out Absurdistan by Eric Cambell (ABC Journo) It's his autobiography and a lot of it covers his time in China and Tibet.
Oh and as for the Avatar?

Without trying to defend the CCP, which I believe in many situations is absolutely IN-defensible, they aren't exactly committing genocide as you've implied here. They are commiting cultural genocide maybe, but it in no way compares to Rwanda or post Yugo conflicts.
LTR, did you get anywhere near Kashmir/Jammu? It's probably a perfect spring time destination now things have quietened a bit.

I don't think it was Kashmir that cooped the brunt was it? I don't follow natural disaster stuff too closely.
But it is interesting to see that the Howard Govt. donated $5mil to Pakistan, one of the poorer countries per capita. Yet they gave the USA, the world's richest country, comparitively (sp?) richer than any other country in history, $10mil for far less people displaced and actual need.
I rarely get aroused enough to become violent, but I would certainly punch Howard in the head and implement the "Where there is one, there is more" addage! Not because I feel sorry for the Paki's but for the self righteous attitude that he dribbles which is obviously only self serving lies. I hate abuses of power!
Can I enter a thread without talkin politics????

What gets me pissed is that they can spend $100mill on stupid IR reform tv adds but can only give $5.5mill in aid when over 20,000 people die.
Anyway, sorry to get off topic.......
You what really pisses me off, the other day i was walking my siberian-american huskys & you know how dogs are, they like to sniff everything, including each other's butts.
So this guy comes up to me & says "Hey! Get your dog's ass outta that other dog's nose". I replied "How dare you call them dogs, they're Siberian-American Huskys. That's like calling an African-American a black. That's like calling a Mexican-American & Mexican. That's like calling a homesexual a stupid faggot".
It pissed me off so bad that I dyed my hair blue, got a nose ring & moved to San Francisco.
But that's another story.
Looks like you had a great trip Alex, those pics are fantastic. Indian Kashnir was 2nd hardest area hit by Earthquake after region north west of islamabad, & there are also high casualties in Agfhanistan.

Cool! I guess exciting isn't the word for a largely 19th century style railway...Something I'd like to see nonetheless, it must be a blast from the past.

I'm in india at the moment.
Went riding in Nepal for most of January.
Nepal rocks for MTBing.
Rode tons of trails around pokhara, kathmandu, chitwan, Manakamana (very tech with a cable car for shuttles) and part of the annapurna circut (jomsom to Beni).
There is a French guide (Tongi) in Pokhara who has brand new Commencial duallies you can hire. He is also a guide who can show you all the trails. I spent 3 weeks hitting up the trails in Nepal, best XC I've ever ridden with some fun DH as well.
you can email me bushrider@gmail.com for specific info
FYI I usually ride DH in the lower blue mtns
http://www.photonima.se/ has pics from my trip taken by sweedish mountainbiking photographers that I was hanging out with as well as lots of other MTN bike pics. Should be a sweet pic of me pulling a nose wheelie somewhere in there.
