Got a couple of Qs about car stereo's...

Can you hook up an Ipod to directly to an amplifier, negating the need for a head unit? The Ipod has a built in volume control, so I think this might work. Does anyone know if it would?

If not, can you hook into an older head unit that doesn't have a specific line in jack, but has CD Changer ability?

Cheers.

no, an amp runs on specific voltages,
normally 2v,4v,8v 4volts being the most common.

ipods dont have specific voltages line outs.
i guess it's can be done if you get some analog jacks and wire the thing up, then you lose all control over bass, treble, balance, etc...

if you are running subs then good luck tuning them all!!!

best bet get the ipod to work with the head unit. at least there the signals are regulated.

Yes & yes. It's not a very good way to go about it though.

Depends on the head unit. The guys at caraudioaustralia.com will able to let you know whether it's doable, and whether or not an adaptor is available.

If you cant connect that way, the next best option is an FM modulator. Sound quality isnt quite as good as a direct line in, but if the majority of your mp3's are 128kbps or lower you probably wont notice it.

As said you can connect the Ipod directly to the AMP. The best way to do this would be a stereo connector to two RCA connectors. On problem is, if you have an amp with more than 2 channels or more than one AMP. But you can still use RCA double adapters if this is the case.

if you were lazy you could just use an itrip? i wouldnt use anytype of FM transmitter, even the Apple iTrip, they have the crappest reception, the only way they work well is on long open roads, like 25km away from any other transmitting device/tower, too much interferrence...
