Does anyone know what this is a symptom of? Just noticed it this morning, the compression still seems fine but when it rebounds it clunks on topping out. only after a large bounce though.

Uhh, what fork?
Some do it due to the nature of the design, others may do it due to poor rebound damping or something going awry.

the fork is a manitou axle comp, It has only just started doing this hence my concern.

if i knew what fork it was it would help.

if they are manitou, sounds like the lower seal has blown out of it's mount, and has started dumping oil into the lowers.

if it's marzocchi, maybe the damper rod has broken, or the adjuster has self adjusted.

if it's rock shox, well could be a bundle of different things.

ok I'd say the lower damper seal has popped out of its mount, and it's started dumping oil into it's lowers,

you'll notice a decrease in damping over time, both compression and rebound, and then eventually you'll notice it starts to lack travel and seemily bottoms out half way through it's travel.

solution I hear you ask?

you can rebuild it yourself, and put the seal back, but you probably need a new lower plug and seal. when you put them back yourself, they don't tend to last long before it happens again.

Fuck. I am an idiot.

I found the problem, wasn't the forks at all. some of my cables are a bit too long, combinded with my bike lock they were bouncing around a bit, and on big compressions clunking against the shifters.

I am an idiot.

Thanks for the help though Juls
