you need a 'both' option...
commuter / rigid XC - clips
skatepark etc - flats
DH - both, depends on my mood
and what sort of riding you do
what sort of riding do i do ?
kickin' your arse :D
clips, clips, clips

clipless for dh
flats for road (cause idont own a second pair of clipless)
changin back to flats for awhile cause im sika walkin up hills in cleats + i ripped my cleat clean outa my shoe and have to replace the plate!:(
only reason for useing cliples for dh is that im a crapy sprinter and it gives me more power!

At the moment I ride clips in on my XC bike and flats on my dh/freeride/dj/street/general abuse hardtail. When I eventually get a dedicated DH bike I'll probably run clips on it. I really love being able to just pick up my XC bike and put it wherever I want.

Flats. All the way baby. (although if I get a commuter I may take a look at clips)
I ride trails/street, I could never ever ride in clips. And yes you are cheating if you can only bunny-hop with clips on :D
i used to ride in clips, but grew out of my shimano shoes and then haven't bothered replacing them as i got DMR V8's then holzfeller pedals on my new bike, i mainly do trail, downhill and getting into some dirt jumping now, i used to only be able to bunny hop with clips, until one ride one foot came loose as i 'bunny-hopped' and then i just said i'm gonna learn this the right way, so i changed to flats. I reckon they are better for all round stuff, where as clips are good for your commuting and efficiency.
clips all the way.
i would like to thank the person who invented clips personally
NO CLIPS, all you need is shoes with the right grip pattern on the bottom for your pedals. i have been worked many times with clips. haha no thanks

usually if you've got them you use them! i just use clips for bmx
I run Clipless on my DH/FR Bike, for trail riding, downhill, freeride ect I will always run clipless.
when I eventually get my streety hardtail, I'll run flats on that.
For a dual suspension I'd always run clipless, the stroke is far superior and smoother, and you can put more power down cause your not wasting so much energy into the suspension, and you can run less platform in the shock then too. (no need for platform forks either)
but again, for street hardtails, doing dirt jumping, streety tricks, trials ect.. it's flats. Just gotta get enough money to get me one!

Clips for XC
Yeah clips all the way not just for efficency but also for bike handling, even just cornering you so much more control with the positioning of your weight on the pedals makes a massive difference. And yes I can bunny hop on flats:D

Never tried clips, want too though. When I can afford to order a pair of clip-in shoes that come in 'bloody huge' size, I'll try 'em out...
Ummmm, yeah, so flats ATM....

Flats for me, Baby!
Don't really like the idea of going to work, gym, parties etc. in a pair of geeky bike shoes and I do like having comfort in the knowledge that I can bail out quickly if need be when I (inevitably) stack on more 'enthusiastic' rides. However I am thinking of investing in a pair for XC runs when I get my new bike.
Speaking of which, what types of clip and what style of shoe does everyone go for?

ive just cliped in for dh and i dont think i can go back now, just pulling and pushing helps you so much . i freeride a lot too i dont clip in for the north shore but i still do drops and gaps cliped in .
I've got both, and preffer clips for pedally tracks and riding the hardtail. But, for some reason, falts just give me more confidence through the turns when drifting.
Can you argue with Hill, Rennie, Kovarik and (sometimes) Graves?
Clips = fast, pedally & straight-line-rocky
Falts = tech, off-camber & loose

Speaking of which, what types of clip and what style of shoe does everyone go for?Stiff XC shoes all the way, I just changed back after running skate style spd shoes for a while and the difference in power is quite surprising (and I don't normally notice these sorts of things). The only reason I can see for running anything else is if you're planning to do super long hike-a-bikes or need to go out in public and not look like a total geek (I'm a lost cause as far as that goes so it doesn't matter).

XC: Clips

4X: Either, depending on track…

NO CLIPS
Although they help you pedal and kinda help cheat in the bunnyhopping process I find that clipin pedals are still bets left to the endurance fellas. i ride not clipped in for my freeride and that does me fine.

i don't use clips and i DH, a little DJ and a little FR. I'm one of those people who will tolerate it if others do, but never even try them myself.

I don;t think it's a question of tolerance. If other people clip in thats fine, it's what they want. It doesnt cause me hindrance.

Theres good and bad points to both. So you have to try both and see what works for you.
Flats everywhere for me.

clips is for racing only, if you can't do the same stuff on flats when riding then learn.

I use Mallet C's and Adidas Hematoma's
I think I am the only non-Panozzo thats got them in Aus with them. That I've seen anyway.

Love being clipped in on my dh bike. Feels awsome keeping your feet up and pinning it around all the corners you used to want to hang a foot out on. Added bike control through the rough stuff is a bonus too.

I dont ride with clips at the moment thats cos i do a lot of dj and freeride but i may try it for dh one day. but i just cant get enough of the look of a nice set of flats on my bike and you dont have to have and shoe in particular when you want to go for a ride

i used to race xc and rode with them all the time.
i now ride dh, and have just started experimenting with them, and am not to sure about them on the dh bike, but i live by them on the xc bike.

clip for DH, and since i use the same bike for commuting and street, i guess i use them for that too...
im running shimano m545 pedals and m180B shoes. although sometimes i wish id ponied up the extra $20 for DX pedals...
i love the idea of being clipped in. so much extra power.. and i run them just loose enough to slide my foot out when going into a corner really low and fast...

Currently riding flats in all forms, but sick of losing good foot position  so switching to clips for DH and then evantually 4x once i can gate start decent.
I am riding flats, I have never tried cliples. I want to get my skills to my peak and then see how much better it is with cliples.

I ride clipless. You'll have to get use to it first. After that its all good :)

For XC and DH - clipless is the way. Even in technical stuff, being attached to you bike gives you more control. Getting out comes naturally so even if you stack hard, you by miracle unclip.
