Just cracked the frame of my 2002 GT I-Drive and was wondering if anyone had any problems with GT honouring the warranty of bikes made before they changed Australian distributors. The warranty that came with the bike at the time says it will be repaired or replaced free of charge but apparently owners of models 2002 or before only get the chance to buy a replacement at wholesale price. Anybody else had similar issues or happen to be the neice/nephew of the fair trading ombudsman?
Any help appreciated
Cheers :)
Mezby, first things first. Welcome to Farkin.
Now, the first step with your bike is to get it to a GT dealer, preferably the one you bought it from. No amount of cyber advice is going to tell you ANYTHING about your specific case.
Of course I'm assuming you are the original owner, because if not then you can kiss bye-bye to any warranty claim.
Hmmm... and just noticed the 2002 model date. What is GT's warranty period?

Hey Grip,
yeah what he's trying to say is that he's done that... He contacted the dealer and he's been told that because its a 2002 frame the new owners of GT dont intend to honour the warranty as it is stated in his owners manual, on their website etc... instead they told him that since the company changed hands they will give him the warranty option of buying one frame off them at wholesale price.
its better than nothing but still falls far short of the 5 year replacement warranty he was promissed (also keep in mind that he bought the bike, after GT went bust and was already bought out by the new owners and was told by the salesperson at the LBS that the warranty was fully covered!)
all sounds like a bit of a dud deal... surely if you buy out a company and continue to trade under their brand name selling bikes you've got to honour your outstanding warranties.
I'd assume that the importers would have a deal with GT for warranty replacement. It's not usually the local guy who wears the replacement it would be the manufacturer irespective of who the importer into Australia is.
I know with Da Bomb any warranty issues for frames we sold were covered by the new importers who would have just made a claim with Da Bomb bikes.

Um. How on God's earth did you get a 2002 GT? GT went backrupt in 01, and didn't produce bikes again until 03. Sounds like you got conned.

GT are pritty shocking with warrenty...
My old, large ruckus i-drive 2.0 broke in the swingarm, so i looked into warrenty, its:
6months for all moving parts.
1yr for non-moving parts.
I had payed my ruckus off fully 9 months before this happened, BUT, they didn't cover warrenty...i asked in discust. WHY????, they stated, "You warrenty started from the moment you put any kind of deposit on the bike", i was raging when i was told this....however, the superhero GT rep VERY VERY kindly hooked me up with a brand new swingarm laying around, so he gave it to me understanding my position.
So, i don't know how lucky you will be, there warrenty may have been different back then, i dunno, but these days, for me, they're pritty shocking.
Good Luck- Drew.

So it was 2nd hand then, definatly not warranty.......................

Not necessarily. A "demo" bike can be sold as new by a shop. It's the SHOP that's using it as a demo... if you buy it you're still the first buyer/owner FROM a GT dealer.

your best bet would be to talk to your local bike store who stock gt or even the one you brought it from
they are normaly pritty good with this sort of stuff in my view
no one on here can tell you exactly what gt is going to do so you need to talk to them !!
cheers
