Anyone can ride an 8Kg bike up or down any road of any incilne, from 5 to 20- percent. Try riding a 15Kg bike up a 20percent incline on dirt and rocks. Try descending at 60K's then take 90 degree turn on rocks and dirt. I love road biking and I love mtb just as much, but I must say mtb is much more exilirating.
I'm a kid again, bring on the pain

None of the above and all of the above, I try and do everything.
I have a 60cm Std geometry road bike that weighs 10Kgs, and I have 21.5" Std(I think) geometry mtb, it is quite a bit heavier than my road bike so I'm guessing it weighs about 15kgs maybe a bit less. The heavier the better for me, that way I'll really notice the difference when I can afford the bikes I want.

for the sake of keeping things clear for those that like to compare and count grams...
The weight of your road bike plus the weight of your XC bike should equal the weight of your downhill bike.
Also, the weight of all three bikes should not exceed 40kg, otherwise you have underspent on exotic materials.
For further reference you could look up the pythagorian bike triangle or einsteins theory of bike relativity.
where's my wine glass???

I have ridden road for a couple of years and only recently taken up MTB, with the proviso that I live in Hobart and ride up the side of a mountain when off road (lots of hills on road), I find MTB forcing me to a whole new level of fitness.
Oh and some of my on road bikes are heavier than my MTB.

I like riding. Road, XC, 4x, skatepark, and DH. I think freeriding should be abused.

I love my mountain bikes, but I still miss the roadie days of ripping down the side of a big hill at 80+.
That's exhilirating too :)

Settle down internet forum hard man, I was just responding to a thread that was closed at first, and then responding to a response about the weight of my bike.
We'll arrange a place in the CBD and I'll show you how much of a bitch I'am, smartass.

I only have a xc bike and a roadie :( A wise man once said the correct number of bikes to have is n+1 (n being the number of bikes you currently have ;))
I love riding both my bikes (mtb more though) and i hopefully soon i get get a jump bike or something and be hardcore...
