just an idea, i know that we post alot of questions in specific areas but do you think a general technique or mechanical tips forums would be any good?

Just pondering.

It's definately worth considering. I know that training/techniques forums have worked well in the past, but I spose it's a matter of demand.

not so sure a training/techniques section is needed as much as a "help how do i do this" mechanics area. a lot of threads in a lot of sections are people asking for advice on building/repairing stuff. might make it easier for people to find prior repair topics and use them.
then again, people seem to be getting the help as it is now, so maybe the simple layout the forums already have is all thats needed.

hmmm, on closer inspection that reads as no answer at all. i think i'll go sit down for a while....

That's a good point lupine, but isn't that what the parts section is kinda for?

probably, but it seems to get used mostly for "i wanna spend $ on this, what do you think" type stuff.
it would be nice to collect all the help threads together for people who want a hand with actual mechanical repairs. like the guy who was looking for oil level info for bombers, or peachy with his headset, rather than hunting thru 6 pages of what do you think of bombers for DJ

i reckon put in some subforums (can u do that?) in parts n stuff for forks, frames, wheelset, drivetrain, and then have that as the tips section. then the general parts and stuff can be for what can i get for however much, and recommendations. or not.

i really like how simple this forum is.
if you look at some forums around, you have ones that have 20+ base sections, and then each of thiose is split into 10 sub sections. here once you know what area you want to look at, you're there.
does farkin really have the traffic to justify splitting into so many small sections, or is it better to add one at a time as it is needed as happened with the watering hole area?
maybe the next section, a general mechanical help section. how do i rip my forks out, how do i tension a headset properly, that kind of thing.
also tho, most of those questions can be answered by saying "go to the park tools help section and read their directions on ........."

As much as I like sharing information, I personally am not keep on a DIY forum, it's too easy for someone to get out of their depths with mechanical work and screw something up, then turn around and blame those who gave them the advice. Maybe it's just an attitude I've developed from working on bikes so much, the whole "if I have to tell you how to do this, you shouldn't be doing it", but yeh, I dunno about it... make sure a nice chunky disclaimer is at the top of the forum, "you accept all responsibility for your actions".

We definetely get the traffic in the forums to perhaps justify it, but I'm not really sure we need such a thing, mabe Im wrong, shall discuss it with the others.

(I really think how everything is working at the moment is optimal)

Having said that, there's always room for improvement!

yeh, im not saying make a bijjilion new forums, i've jsut noticed a fair few mechanical questions (eg fork removal etc.) pop up recently and thought it would be niffty to have an area with all this kinda stuff in it.
not saying we need it for sure, just suggesting and seeing if anyone else thought the same.
