View Full Version : Front Wheel
im in the market to get a good front wheel, i'd loe to get the complete wheelset, but i dont have enough mullah.
so my budget is around $200-$300
has to have a 20mm axle.
running RS Pikes.
need hub, spokes, hub, rim.
doesn't have to be ultra light, just a good wheel that will go the distance.
please advise.

I'm fairly envious of my wife's front wheel...
Hope Bulb 20mm axle (32 spoke)
DT Revolution spokes
Alloy nipples
Mavic 721 rim
Continental Vertical ProTection 2.3 Kevlar tires
Superlight XC tube
This front wheel is SO light and strong...
Not that it matters, but she runs a Pike (Team Dual Air) as well.
About the only way we could make it a little lighter without losing strength is to change the rotor bolts to titanium, and maybe a different rotor
Whoops! Sorry, forgot about your budget... This front wheel setup is probably worth close to $500AUS...
woops, a bit too expensive, but the specs does sound nice.

Option 2
Chain reaction (UK online bike site)
Hope Bulb 20mm (Black)
Mavic 819 disc rim
Dt Swiss Champion spokes (IN SILVER)
Total:$254.55 AUD
Here is the link for the build of a dt swiss 240 hub if you want to play around with different rims and etc.

The build(OPTION 2) was off a online website, so there is no chance you will get it for the price i said in the original post. However it is possible to option 1roughly around your budget
well after a bit of look around, i found that mavic are pretty good.
i after black spokes as well. with maybe a white hub. (gotta bling it up a bit) :)

Mate save yourself the trouble on a white hub. Go silver spokes, black spokes cost more(go figure!) black and silver all the way.

Without bringing up the old Black vs Silver spokes debate black spokes are more expensive because there is extra steps in the production adding costs. Good quality spokes (such as DT) they are meant to be as strong as each other, but cheap spokes use a cheap production method to get them black and actually weaken the spokes. So if your getting cheap spokes, it's better to go silver.
whatever it costs im not going to use silver spokes, i just find them too look extremely odd with black rims.
i currently use silver spokes on black rim, they give the illusion of being black but with an heavy big shine...
like a shiney black.

You haven't really specified whether you want a light XC type wheel, or something much stronger for jumping and freeride use.
Your best bet is, if you want something in a hurry, go to a reputable LBS, get them to call up Dirtworks (wheelcraft) and see what sort of wheel you can pick up for the money. At least you can buy single wheels without too much of a hassle and you'd be almost guaranteed to have it within a couple of working days, no worries about spoke colour, crappy quality spokes, getting the wheel laced etc. You can pull it straight out the box, slap a tire on it and away you go.
well i went around to have a look, there were some Dabomb wheels with the lot for $200, but i've heard of da bomb making wheels...
the wheel will be for a bit of everything, doesn't have to be lightweight, just something that will go the distance and quite reasonably priced.
so far i got a approx quote for $330
dice roulette hub
mavic 819 and some black spokes.
im gonna give dirtworks a go...no hassles.
